JAMES BROWN - Live At The Apollo: 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set

Ranked as one of the greatest live albums of all time, James Brown’s Live At The Apollo celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate this landmark release as part of a “Record Store Day” exclusive, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will release a limited edition 7” vinyl single, James Brown – Live At The Apollo 50th Anniversary, featuring two previously unreleased tracks recorded at the Apollo in 1972: the upbeat and funky “There It Is” and “Pass The Peas,” featuring Fred Wesley & the J.B.’s. These tracks will appear on the Live At The Apollo: 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition, including the legendary LPs Live At The Apollo Vols. I, II & III, plus the previously unreleased Vol. IV – coming out later this year.

HIGHlIGHTS:
• Previously unreleased recordings from forthcoming 50th anniversary edition
• original single mixes never before on vinyl
• 5,000 copies worldwide
• Individually Numbered

Damn, all my money will be gone before Christmas with another "gotta pick up" release!! I'm guessing this will be released on or around October 24, 2012 (as it was recorded in 1962 50 years earlier.)

Interesting news. I wonder if JB ever got that title "King of Apollo" considering how many times he performed there from '59 up until 2005 at least.

If he didn't he should have.

Out of all the folks who performed here, his name was the biggest when performing at the Apollo Theater.

Not sure how many artist released records recorded at the theater, but I know he has the most with 4 (and now another unreleased one coming with this box set.)

Mike is my man, but they call him an Apollo legend? The Jackson 5 only performed there a couple of times before they got signed to Motown and never played the Theater again (though to be fair, after around 68-69 the Theater circuit was never the same again.) Thanks to artist like James Brown, blacks could play in the bigger arenas now.

But James Brown (out of all the other Theater's on the chitln circuit) continued to perform at the Apollo. He stopped doin' the Regal, the Uptown, the Howard and the Royal (where he recorded his second live album in 1963) was torn down in 1971.

James last place before he was buried was a final showing at the Apollo Theater. cool

Naw, it will be on CD. That 7' vinyl was only for a single release promoting the record.

I've come to find out that Universal is also planning a 1-CD compilation devoted to various of JBs Apollo Theater performances entitled, The Best of the Apollo: 50th Anniversary.

http://www.amazon.com/Bes...pollo+live

Sounds interesting...maybe those rare mixes will be available on this CD.

Cool, didn't even see that. So fans still have chance to get some JB Apollo material if they don't wanna go all out with the Box Set. Smart move.

I wonder if we will get some video ... there's the one released a few years back on James Brown in the 60's and there is some floating around with the JBS from 1970.

Thanks for the info--as well as the other orgers' info on the 1 CD Apollo release. Great news for JB fans. wink

Are they putting his 1974 performance there on the set?

I'm currently in the process of reading this great JB bio:

It's so crazy to find out that in December of 1978, he was arrested during a performance at the Apollo Theater in New York. eek

Eh, I'll probably pick this up but I would much rather see a series of box sets that collects all of his recordings from the fifties through the end of the seventies. It sounds like the vast majority of the material in this new box set is currently in print and easily available. There's too much of his music that is either out of print or only available as expensive imports, what are they waiting for? Release it!

Yeah he got arrested because he refused to comply by a government order to leave the country while, I believe, the Georgia Supreme Court was investigating his radio stations for bribery and payola.
