More Tax Problems for Lauryn Hill?

August 29, 2012

Link

As Lauryn Hill awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to failure to file federal tax returns, there’s evidence that she also failed to pay $446,386 in taxes to the state of New Jersey.

A civil judgment was entered against the singer in a New Jersey court on June 14. Unlike her federal case, the state tax mess has not yet become a criminal matter.

Hill admitted in June that she intentionally failed to file three years' worth of income tax returns with the IRS. The singer, who gets most of her money from music and film royalties, admitted failing to file income taxes in 2005, 2006 and 2006, a period during which she admitted to earning more than $1.8 million, according to court documents.

Hill is currently out on $150,000 bail pending a sentencing hearing in November. The mother of six faces up to three years in prison and a possible $75,000 in fines.

This might be a dumb question, but.....

I'm not American so I don't know about your tax laws. Can't she just pay what she owes and the fine? Why would they send a mother of 6 to jail? Who will look after her children??

I guess you have a point. Hopefully she can get the money. I wouldn't want her to go to jail and leave those kids without a parent. I'm sure Daddy doesn't have much time for these 6 kids. He's probably already started siring new ones razz

Generally the government doesn't put people in jail for owing taxes but for tax evasion... Guess Lauryn just didn't wanna pay it or wasn't willing to work out a payment plan.

I wonder if she's doing all this to make some kind of "statement"? hmmm is this her way of rebelling against Uncle Sam and the US government? Is she really prepared to go to prison, just to make a point?
