Is This Kells Best Song?

I for sure think it is the best single he has ever released, and is my 3rd all time favorite song from him.

For all the outright dumb songs he has made, this song is one that reminds me he can really put something together.

The arrangement is very sweeping & epic, it's not the usual piano chord, rain dropesque R&B sound he usually goes for.

I don't think he will ever top this single imo.

Oh and the video is great to!

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Nice song, but I don't think it's his "Best". My vote goes to, "I Believe I Can Fly". That being said, I have always thought of Kelly as being one of the smartest in the business. He is capable of writing a song for mostly, any demographic like, "I Believe I can fly" for the kids and "Soft-Rock" audience and then turn right back around and write something like, "Bump & Grind" for the R&B sect. Despite his personal antics, he seems to know how to write a "near" perfect song, for any audience...

Yea he is definitely one of the most versatile artists in music of our time. He can make a hip hop track, motown style music, gospel song, bedroom music, he's an excellent songwriter etc. He can do just about anything and usually does it well.

Not sure what his best song woul be. Its hard to say because he has so many good ones. My fav album of his is his 1995 self titled one. Love songs like 'religious love', 'tempo slow' etc and everything else on that album.

I think it's actually very bland, generic and lacking in artistry as a composition.

It's sounds like you're attracted to the production more than the composition, the way you're talking about "sweeping and epic". I do see what you mean by that. But still to me even that is still just a decent rip off of a classic sound, done in a more electronic sounding way.

Don't let me put you off though! lol

I'd prob rate these as some of his best although I'm really only familiar with the first 3 albums.

In no particular order:

Your Body's Callin

Bump N Grind

For You

You Remind Me Of Something

Step In My Room

Be Happy

I Can't Sleep Baby

Thank God It's Friday

Home Alone

Spendin' Money

When A Womans's Fed Up

Half On A Baby

Get Up On A Room

We Ride

I Believe I Can Fly

I'm Your Angel

Life

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

The entire 98-01 era of Kells is my favorite.. everything he put out was FIRE

I mean the songs and videos

Home Alone

When A Womans Fed Up

Be Careful

I'm Your Angel

If I Could Turn Back

Half On A Baby

Satisy You

I Wish

A Womans Threat

Storm Is Over Now

Bad Man

The Worlds Greatest

Contagious

He was making killer singles & videos in that era, although i like Chocolate Factory.. it was when he started his decline.

This man can write a tune ..... I was sleep when I heard the Sound of Victory....that song is beautiful, totally broke me out my sleep.

I always thought it was joke that he can right pure raunch then come up with the likings of the last album.....he makes me want to shake him...hard.

Identity

His tarnished public image looms large over his songwriting dexterity, and yet his place in contemporary music is secure. To quote the man himself, "What's R & B without the R?"

nod This cut just proves that if Kelly used more live instrumentation in his work, it would stand even more stronger. His vocals on this cut were unparalleled, not to mention Kirk Franklin and the Family were on this one as well.

Lyrically, it's one of his best. I was surprised to learn Kellz wrote most of the song when he was 16.

Without a doubt, this is his top song of millennium era. As simplistic as these lyrics may be, this song is top notch when it comes to songwriting and instrumentation. Lush and heartbreaking.

12 Play is a classic no doubt, but besides Sadie. There is nothing lyrically on the album i would call great. He got much better at writing on the next albums.
