Guadalupe Yoli. She is known as the queen of Latin soul. She had a very "interesting" life to say the least. I would actually love to see a proper bio pic on her, but I would also like to see a real actress play her. Lookswise Zoe could pull it off, but she is not charismatic or talented enough from what I have seen. Here are some of my favorite songs from La Lupe.
La Gran Tirana
Que Te Pedi
El Cascabel
Fijense
Puro Teatro

Wow,,,,,thanks for the introduction^^^^^
This is definitely a treat of an addition to have in your music collection. I'm still in the process of acquiring the latin music scene, the problem is it has so many facets and you don't know where to start.
T4P, I really enjoyed those selections. She reminds me of Earth Kitt, I don't know why I feel that way though, but she really does.

Yes! I always called her the Latina Earth Kitt!!
So happy to share! One of the many gifts my father has given me is a love and appreciation for Latin music, particularly the music of the 1970s.
She isn't too well known in the mainstream, especially not like Celia Cruz, but those two women are probably the lone female vocalists who I listen to when listening to this style of Latin music. Unfortunately, when Fania Records (the 1970's Latin Motown) bought Tico, the label both La Lupe and Celia were on, Fania decided to focus on promoting Celia. So, Lupe was pretty much an afterthought. That combined with other personal stuff, just didn't allow for her to be as big a star. However, it did nothing to diminish the great music she recorded. A few years ago the John Leguizamo movie "Empire" played one of her songs during a shoot out, and my sister and I almost lost it in the movie theater. LOL!!!
I cannot believe I forgot Busamba. It is another one my favorites by her. I am playing it on my iPod now.
She performed with Tito Puente for some time also. You might like this one, too.
A taste of her Santeria faith, which she followed for most of her life until she became a Christian after an evangelist allegedly healed paralysis she suffered from what was a called a "domestic incident."
"El Carbonero" y "La Salve Plena"
Ok. Sorry I hijacked this thread. I will stop now. I just get so excited when it comes to sharing music and artists I love. [Edited 8/16/12 19:27pm] perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

free2bfreeda said: imo kimberly elise would be a much better choice to portray nina simone. her skin tone is more true to nina's and kimberly has a great acting background. zoe is good, but i cannot see her emotting the hardcore edginess of nina simone. she's so much closer image wise to nina simone than zoe saldana, and she's got stronger acting chops imo. Yes, Kimberly Elise would be a much better choice. Zoe does not make since as Nina Simone. PaisleyRose was here

Whew! if orgasm was translated into music, this would def be one of the results
Can you recommend more songs in that vein? By her or other latin artists(namely, Celia). I remember seeing a short segment in the "Queen Celia" documentary where a similar type of music was being performed by a local band, who gave insights on where did this type of music orginated from.

Hmm. I have to go through my collection and think about that, especially for female vocalists.
This is not an Afro-Cuban Orisha or Santeria-related song from her, but you might like it.
Unfortunately, there are no clips on youtube, but you might really like this album, especially tracks 2 and 3 as they feature female vocalists. I have it in my collection, so feel free to OrgNote me about it, if you want.

Here are some songs from one of my favorite albums with this Afro-Cuban rumba style of music that is somewhat similar. The artists are Patato y Totico. Patato, the rumbero (vocalist) made Santeria dolls.
Aqua Que Va Caer
En El Callejon
Of course, Hector Lavoe's Aguanile is probably one of the most famous songs that reflect the Santeria faith.
