oh very well lol

I love the way they talked about how everyone froze during the The Way You Make Me Feel shoot when he suddenly sang, and describing the structure of the video shoot and how it evolved

How they would lightheartedly put on his high voice but also emphasized he had a very low register and proved it with vocal warmups from 1994 we're already familiar with

and most of all, just how beautiful he was throughout it all when moving around, smiling, posing, working with people, being so kind. I was touched when in the Bad shoot the "give me a quarter" guy was injured after michael grabbed him and they wanted to do another take, but the guy was hurt and michael insisted it's okay they keep it that way and felt bad for the guy. So sweet.

Oh and Prince and Jeffery Daniels were talked about too, some clips of Jody Watley at Soul Train dancing were also shown smile

I got Bad 25 in the mail today and I'm watching the Wembley show right now...god damn, MJ was at his prime back then, he sounded better live than other artists could have ever sounded in the studio...may he rest in peace, a crying shame that he had to go so soon!

And I just get a kick out of the fact that MJ was groping the microphone stand and singing Dirty Diana while Princess Diana was in the audience that night biggrin

Treacy's Thriller

Walter Dhladhla/Agence-France Presse; Philip Treacy

The milliner Philip Treacy created the dramatic mask atop the Swarovski crystal ''spaceman'' suit from Michael Jackson's 1996 History Tour. Mr. Treacy on Sunday showed a series of hats and headpieces inspired by the legendary performer's stage costumes.

Published: September 16, 2012

LONDON — Just the idea was a “Thriller”: linking Michael Jackson’s stage wardrobe, from the military buttoned jackets to his tiny-waisted trousers, with Philip Treacy, the milliner with an imagination as big as the late artist’s voice.

Mr. Treacy’s challenge was to put together, on female models chosen for their African descent, the outfits from Mr. Jackson’s co-designers, Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins — and then create for each ensemble a hat to correspond in spirit or to tell the Michael Jackson story.

That could mean a curving metallic swoop of a headdress or hats decorated with childish playground pieces, as if from the famous Neverland ranch.

The show, prepared in the utmost secrecy for Sunday night, is to be considered a prelude to the sale of the Tompkins and Bush collection, scheduled by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California, on Dec. 2.

An emotional Mr. Treacy spoke of his first contact with the auction house when he went with his muse, the late Isabella Blow, to buy Marilyn Monroe’s false eyelashes.

In a memorial to Ms. Blow and to the late Alexander McQueen, the famous sparkling Michael Jackson glove is to appear from under a veil of black hanging leaves, representing a tribute to his friends who have died. A headpiece in the shape of a ship with billowing sails, rigging and masts — as well as Swarovski sparkles — was created because the last hat that Mr. McQueen asked for before his death was an ivory ship.

“Living with these clothes in a vault has given me emotional energy and I believe that the hats are a futuristic way of showing the most beautiful clothes I have ever seen,” Mr. Treacy said. “I was thinking of Napoléon’s words ‘with baubles that men are led.’ These clothes were designed to fill a stadium of 80,000 people. Yet they are made like haute couture.”

Mr. Bush, whose partner passed away last year, was behind the theatrical use of metallic martial decoration — actually made from gilded plastic. The stage wear designer is scheduled to publish his book, “The King of Style: Dressing Michael Jackson,” with Insight Editions on Oct. 30.

The items destined for the auction, which have been exhibited in Chile and in Ireland, include Jackson’s Captain EO shirt, the black Spandex outfit from his “Scream” video and the breakaway suit he wore during his BAD tour in the late 1980s. The auction house says a portion of the proceeds will benefit Guide Dogs of America and the Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.

These are the clothes that inspired Mr. Treacy to relive his own emotions about Michael Jackson’s life and music — and to present them to the world not as a static wardrobe but as vibrant artistic treasures.

“I find it very humbling how the world has embraced this work as an art form,” said Mr. Bush, who came to London from Los Angeles for the show Sunday.

“The fact that Michael Jackson had it on will draw people, but I saw the look in Philip’s eyes at the detail. We made handmade outfits, like Philip is hands-on with a piece of metal, fabric or a feather,” he added.

The piece with the longest history is not the red “Thriller” jacket but the jacket with police badges. It has been 25 years since it was first seen on the BAD tour.

Mr. Bush explained that his “boss,” as he called Mr. Jackson, took a very close interest in all the outfits, even ordering bespoke clothes for Bubbles, his pet chimpanzee.

The performing artist would surely have appreciated the artistic work of Mr. Treacy, who made each headpiece individually with a similar desire for perfection.

“It’s the most exciting show I have ever done. It is a gift to have the models wearing the clothes — Michael Jackson did better than anyone the sense of the extraordinary,” said the milliner.

While Mr. Bush said before the show at the Royal Courts of Justice in London started: “I feel that I am going to touch the sky.”

A model wears a design from the Philip Treacy.

Philip Treacy on day 3 of London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013, at The Royal Courts Of Justice on September 16.

the box was mentioned and later on mj wondered if it was voodoo, but nothing was said about the items though I was waiting for it

also the chris rock/prince interview was referenced and how prince said who's singing that to who cause he's not singing that to me (butt is mine)....though I could have sworn he said that elsewhere not to rock

cee lo met mj at the prince show and it was mentioned mj was a big prince fan

someone asked if prince was approached about doing the special, he wanted no part in it

sign o the times was shown on the screen one time, they were talking about good music of that time and saying stuff about how mj and prince set the standard so high they were rivals, and mariah was saying they were both great, that's it and stuff like that, which I agree with

I was really trying to ask about that smooth criminal bridge and the guy with spike saw me and was going to ask me to talk, but didn't get to me in the end....oh and when asked if any other artists or albums including mj will be covered in a future doc, spike said maybe stevie wonder and people cheered

Loving Al Capone but thats a BOLD statement... It's so similar to "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" by Gloria Estefan (1987) which is odd, overall very pleased with these out-takes/demos.

that's my personal preference .....

I see no resembelnce with gloria estefan's song at all, al capone was created in 1985 ......

this song shows michael's brilliance indeed , how he was capable to create two different versions of the same song , i mean when you listen to al capone it shows some connection to smooth criminal but it's different song, different lyrics and melody......genius

BAD was too strong in the synths on some songs (Speed Demon, Just Good Friends, etc.) Makes the album sound dated. MJ and Riley gave the next album an edge it needed. This is what Quincy lacked.

But not taking anything from Quincy, from the 70's to 80's he was a genius in his own right. Of course, it helps being surrounded by talented people as well.

It's funny, you just mentioned two of my favorite tracks from BAD (I talked about the latter in one of my earlier posts).

And the strong synthesized, bright & crisp, shimmering but metallic sound that dominates the record is actually one of my favorite things about it.

It's all courtesy of Roland's D-50 (a legendary late 80's digital synthesizer) that was HEAVILY utilized on the whole record. They even used "preset" patches from it, because it was so new at that time.

But also - because BAD was recorded on true analog tape, it sounds WARM and funky. I still think the best way to listen to BAD is on vinyl or a cassette tape.

The genius of Quincy Jones (not to mention his actual chops as an arranger and a composer, the dude arranged big band arrangements for SINATRA and co-wrote "P.Y.T."), his real skill was as a producer svengali: knowing just exactly what qualities to utilize from his gang of superstar musicians. His album Back On The Block is a great example of that - it's a mind-boggling array of people from Miles (!) to Big Daddy Kane (lol), and it just works. The same rings true on all his productions and solo albums from The Dude to Give Me The Night etc.

Regarding "Price Of Fame" and "Al Capone" - I'm not diggin' them at all, and I'm not surprised why they were scrapped. :/ They're just weak compositions, as songs. Too "straight forward" and "easy" somehow - all the other MJ-written songs have beautiful hooks: they're interesting. The latter has echoes of Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal, even 2 Bad.
