Different strokes for different folks. I'll say it again she's overrated. Nobody is expecting

her to be a classically trained singer. As has been stated a lot of songs she oversings to

the point your ears bleed. Some call it emotion some call it screeching. I personally can

name several r&b female singers i dig better Tamia, Deborah Cox, Chante Moore, Lalah

Hathaway just to name a few. It's cool if you are one in the fandom of Mary J but she's

not everyone's cup of tea and this has nothing to do with classically trained singers but

some of us prefer not to listen to a trained out of tune screecher either.

Tamia and especially Deborah Cox are terribly underrated in the R&B world. disbelief I cant believe they didnt blow up like Mary did and not to mention their both attractive with killer vocals.

2 of my favorite female vocalists from the 90's. Tamia's last album Between Friends

was real good.

Don't laugh at my funk

On a 1-10 scale....I'd give her a 5. She's always been overrated vocally to me. But that doesn't mean that I don't like her songs, or feel that she doesn't deserve her props, because she does nod.

الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

For me, she is a good singer, who's material is average at best, (with a few exceptions). I have always thought that, Mary has to be depressed in order to put out a great song. For when she is happy, all of her material songs like, doody My favorite song of her's is, "Not 'Gon Cry". She interpretted, Babyface's lyrics very well. Favorite album, "My Life". The rest of her catalogue is average.

Have to agree with you, I only dug "My Life", she really has no vocal range, can not be enoyed live, and basically she has no presence. For all the A type capricorns - drug addictions and all she doesn't cut the mustard. But I will have to admit sometimes sista girl can get an A on fashion.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last....

eek !

That´s an interesting read. Thanks for posting. It sheds a new light on how we rate singers and their talent. I knew you need many takes to get the vocals right ( I have friends in the music business ) but I never knew it was the way it is described in the article above.

I wonder whether Prince needs a lot of "comping". I don´t think so.

He sure uses a lot of vocal tracks though.

Most singers definitely need vocal comping. I watched a clip of Patti LaBelle recording "Shoe Was on the Other Foot" (in the same clip in which she alleges the Jackie Wilson sexual assault) and the vocal I heard wasn't on the final mix. So I imagine most singers like Mary and Patti and others will do mostly 10 vocal takes and then the producer or engineer decide what they need to be part of the final production. That's why you rarely hear of singers who only needed to record ONCE.

It varies. I'm friends with and have worked with this guy, and he prefers to do only 3-4 takes. And the track I did with him was comped very quickly mostly from my first vocal take. So...it varies. Maybe, in the case with Mary, she just sucked lol or maybe the engineers and producers weren't sure of what they wanted from the performance. It just varies, which is why I posted the article. But, yes, even the old-school way of puncinhg in and out is also considered comping.

Forgot the fucking link. lol

I think she has a great voice but her material is drop dead boring of late. Her first hits are still her best!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
