The case for JOE TEX in the ROCK & ROLL HAll of Fame

Over the past few years, Joe Tex has become one of my favorite artist. I think his songs are incredible and is a brilliant songwriter. He died way before my time, hell before I was even thought about, lol. So I learned of him over the years from my pops and uncles and later the internet. We're from Houston and Tex was from right down the street in Baytown.

I think it's is a shame that he has not been inducted into the Rock Hall yet. If you look at his career, just compared to his contemporaries, it should be no reason for his inclusion.

JOE TEX

Of his 48 years on earth, he was a recording artist for over half of those years. He charted 38 singles on the charts between 1960 and 1979. Of those 38 singles, he had two pop top 5 hits (Hold What You've Got and I Gotcha), another top 10 in "Skinny Legs and All" and a barley missing the top 10 at #12 with "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman.)" He has a total of nine top 40 hits on the pop charts. He has four number 1 R&B hits and two more at #2. He has 12 top ten's in total and 20 top 20 hits.

Now let's compare him to other 60s Soul and R&B artist in the Rock Hall.

How about his Soul Clam brother SOLOMON BURKE?

Same number of Billboard charting hits with 38. King Solomon has no top 20 pop hits. He has five top 40 hits. He has one #1 R&B hit in "Got To Get You Off My Mind" and two #2's. HE has a total of nine top 10 hits and 16 top 20 hits on the R&B charts.

Another southern soul brother, WILSON PICKETT

Picket outdoes them both with 51 charting singles. But even with that, only has two top 10 singles on the pop charts. But does has seven pop top 20 hits in total and 16 top 40 hits in total on the pop charts. Wilson also beats hm by one in R&B number 1 hits five to four. But Tex tops him in number two hit's by one. Wicked has him beat in top ten's 16 to 12. He takes him out with his 32 top 20's R&B hits compared to Tex's 20.

How about Double Dynamite, SAM & DAVE

Sam and Dave only charted 17 singles. They had two top 10 hits and one of them wasn't "Hold On, I'm Comin" which peaked at #21. So, they only have 3 top 40 hits. They have two R&B number 1's and another that went to #2. Seven top 10's in total and ten top 20's.

PERCY SLEDGE?

Percy has one more charting hit over Double Dynamite with 18. He has a number 1 pop hit (y;all know what song) and five top 40's in total? HE has four top 10's on the R&B charts.

A not only that, he was an influential figure in music. Some say he was the first rapper, and not even talking about hip-hop. He was the first to put those sermon like vocals in his songs, he did it back with his first charting single, a cover of Etta James "All I Could Do Was Cry."

I still don't get why Joseph Arrington/Joe Tex/Yusuf Hazziez isn't in. The committee's strategy in inducting people is ridiculous and not only that it's political bantering, always trying to get their favorite person in because they bought them a ticket. Joe Tex was an enigma. He could imitate you and then originate. And yes he was definitely one of the first, if not THE first (and he probably was) to "rap" in a song. It surely didn't start with either James Brown or Isaac Hayes despite what history tells you (and what James himself said numerous times). And yeah compared to Percy fucking Sledge, this man ain't in? Gimme a break. He definitely needs to be inducted.

I said before in another thread, his early death really stunted his Legend IMO. He never got a chance to tour the oldies circuit or anything like Wilson Pickett or what Sam Moore is still doin' today. He might have still been making albums like King Solomon up untill his death.

A lot of these artist Legend's grew more in the late 80s and early 90s cause they were around to witness their music being samples and re-recorded or even goin to the top of the charts again like for Percy Sledge and Ben E. King.

I agree in a sense. Dude wasn't even 48 when he died (something like 47) but that still shouldn't stop people from saluting him. But I have to agree on that. Even James Brown didn't really get props for anything he did until late 1980s, early 1990s himself (same with Little Richard interestingly enough). Also, dude put Texas on the R&B/soul music map and you gotta respect a brother who agreed with a club owner's suggestion to have his stage surname basically be a shortening of Texas. Is Texas really represented at all in the R&R Hall of Fame? I don't think it is. neutral

ZZ Hill and probably some blues musicians as side artist like T-Bone Walker. But that's it from Texas ... until Beyonce is eligible in 2027, lol.

I figured. People in general probably think Texas was just blues and country and that's it. neutral Hip-hop (and the screwed and chopped music) gets recognition but never R&B... I don't think Z.Z.'s in though lol I know T-Bone is.

Lil' ol' band from Texas razz

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

ZZ Hill will probably be put in the rock and roll hall of fame before Joe Tex. We all know how many non important bands are in it
