Vintage Electric Keys - Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Clavinet etc.
Can we share some tunes that showcase these beautiful instruments?
Before exploring the likes of Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway, here is where I first fell in love with the Wurli - accompanying Amy Winehouse in Love Is A Losing Game:

Cool thread for us vintage-heads!
When I was recording my demo, I was absolutely in love with vintage keys. I'ma Rhodes dude all day every day. Wurlies are okay and clavinets are so linked to Stevie and reggae that I didn't touch them at all.
I even went as far as to purchase a Fender Rhodes but the one I found would cost so much to repair that I gave it up. But you can do so many things today with a Reason Rhodes patch and tweak it so that it sounds so similar to the old skool thing nowadays.
Hell, I found a Linn drum patch for Reason and if you equalize it and fool around with it, you'll swear it sounds like the shit on Purple Rain.

I know what you mean, I sold mine to one of my friends for a reasonable price. Its a high maintenance if playing is not a priortiy, which I'm sad to say, it isn't for me these days.
However, and if Mr.Neal is lurking(or anybody for that matters, who knows) I'm trying to buy those electric keys that were manufactured in 83/84. I don't know if they're Yamaha, they were used during the Triple Threa/Purple Rain tour, and I think they were the same ones that D'Angelo played during the Essence festival this year.
Does anybody? | |

You're right it's a Yamaha - the CP-70/80 'electric grand'.

The clav ran through the wah pedal is one of my favourite sounds in the world, especially how the percussive release tone contrasts with the smooth deep filter business.
Here's Bobby Sparks wah-wahing the clav with one half of his body while the other takes over the bassline on the moog:

I got my Rhodes back up in my apartment and connected to my homestudio. We have so little room in our ordinary studio it's been put away for about 7 years bbut it's great to get reconnected with the Rhodes again and it's in absolute perfect condition. Norah Jones rented my Rhodes once for a gig in Stockholm. I told them about the trouble with that key and they just said "no problem" and when I got it back the key was fixed /peace Manki

These two are examples of beautiful, classic rhodes tone with tremelo effect. Both from the same album, Music Of My Mind, recorded at Electric Lady Studios in NYC, and actually sequential tracks on the album.
The playing along the composition of the chord changes make the Rhodes sound all the more beautiful!
