Sly Stone vs Stevie Wonder Sorry guys, this is my last thread about Sly, I promise aha
But from 69-74, who would you take? I asked this because they're the first that comes to my mine when I think about one man bands in the early 70's.
I really dig Talking Book and Fulfillingness' First Finale. I haven't been in the mood to check out Innervisions. Stevie is an outstanding artist.
But on the other hand, Stand!, Riot, and Fresh are just miles ahead of the first 2 "classic era" albums from Stevie. That's my honest opinion. I can't really sit through much of Stevie albuns except for Talking Book.

Arguably Stevie's greatest masterpiece. It seems as if Sly's style is more to your taste than Stevie's, I just don't understand why one uniquely brilliant artist is pitted against another as if they were athletes competing for milage.
Anyway, Stevie was most likely influenced by Sly, especially in making Talking Book which sounds as if it took a few hints from Riot (and maybe why you prefer it to Stevie's other works). Two great albums from two great artists. Against the ruin of the world, there
is only one defense: the creative act. -- Kenneth Rexroth

Oh no I love Stevie, I'm just having fun with the whole "vs" thing. I'm going to check out Innervision tonight.

Good point. In all honesty, both artists are brilliant and inventive. They've made their mark. I guess it just boils down to your taste and that's the thing that is important. [Edited 7/27/12 12:45pm] Check me out and add me on:

That's not really a fair comparison. Sly and Stevie were two different cats I think.

Yeah they're, Sly is more on the funk tip, and Stevie is more on soul tip. I just though it'll be cool to compare these two.

Stevie has always struck me as "pop-soul". Sly has more blues and rock influences.

Was Sly rock influence in the 60's? Because I don't think he had any rock tracks in the 70's... [Edited 7/27/12 13:00pm]

Yup. | |

Agreed! Sly had more blues and rock flair to his sound, while Stevie was more "pop-soul." I guess one fact we can connect with both of them is that they came from a strong gospel background. It's very prevalent in their work.

Quick question. Is it true that Sly wore wigs? I read something about Bobby Womack, and he said he did.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He probably did. I believe he stripped down to a more natual, short afro style back in 1976. Check me out and add me on:

Sly always wore wigs. He still wears wigs. I hear he's really baldheaded all the way around. The 1976 period where he wore his natural hair was the only time besides some part of the late 1960s (when he didn't process his hair) that he was seen with his real hair style.

So in all of those pictures that I posted of him in that "random picture" thread, he's wearing a wig?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah. It's like Billy Preston. His 'Fro wasn't really that big. He stopped wearing his "Big 'Fro" style around 1976.

I always thought he wore a wig, but I thought his afro from 73 was real.
The fro he had in '70-'72 is cleary a wig. That stuff was too big. [Edited 7/27/12 13:19pm]

Who, Billy's? | |

No contest. Both are great. One did something the other didn't do and vice-versa.
I read that Stevie put a hurtin' on Sly in 74/75 when Stevie opened for him. One of the shows at Radio City Stevie rocked the crowd and received encores. By the time Sly hit the stage people were booing and leaving.

Cocaine and PCP played a part in it obviously.

Sly's, my bad. There's a video to "Family Affair" from '72, and it was just over the top.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ahhh... but yeah his 1973 hair was real. The Fro in the cover of Small Talk and High on You was real too lol [Edited 7/27/12 13:24pm]

That was his natural hair back in the day. Even before this, he rocked one of those "Tony Curtis" hairstyles that the young cats used to wear in the 50s and early 60s. Like Timmy said, it is a possibly that he has been bald for many years.

What year were the photos with Tom Jones taken? '76? [Edited 7/27/12 13:25pm]

If his hair was real in '73, why did he fake it for '74? That fro in '73 was nice.
I don't know if you've seen this but go to the :55 second mark. Larry is getting down.

Sly was stoned during one of those performances. I can't remember which one.

That PCP was talking to him really GOOOOD... [Edited 7/27/12 13:29pm] Check me out and add me on:

1976. I believe he did the title track to Heard Ya Missed Me. That was an erratic performance, too. Check me out and add me on:

Sure was. That "Family Affair" promo video is so funny. He was living one hell of a grandiose life back in the day to be wearing that. Check me out and add me on:
