The Roots concert Dear musiclovers/nerds/knowitalls,
There will be sunshine for me this summer; I'm going to the Roots in Paradiso in Amsterdam.
I'm thrilled, however, it's especially because I hear they are great, and I'm overly excited (some orgers know that it's cyclic thing), however it's all anticipation, I don't have an indebt knowledge of their ouevre.
So, what songs do I absolutely have to have listened to, so I can act as if I'm a cool girl, or, even better, so I can really enjoy their concert?

They are completely boring. Just go to the show; you'll be okay.

I just read that Guestlove will be DJ-ing the classic noodlanding.
Noodlanding = 'emergency landing' is thursday night - students and every music form is allowed and will be heared. It's a great night (especially when < 25), however, not know for it's exquisit music quality. So, that Guestlove is the dj is just so weird, strange and absolutely wonderful. I bet that 80% of the audicanc will not notice he's the dj.
Hope he'll be so kind to play some Prince songs....

I like The Seed, but again, I find them utterly boring. But I don't like righteous hip hop. I like ignorant hip hop.

WOW!
What a wonderful musicians!
It was a great concert, it was all about music, every single man on that stage gave it all.
These guys are so good, I will remember and relive this concert until I'm an old lady
They truly had guts and treated their audience with respect; they played music and the instrumental interludes were magnificent and impressive.
The guitar player was absolutely genius. I was so overwhelmed by his performance, that I actually stood still. Don't tell mr. Purple, however, I even at one point thought, this guitarist matched the purple master. That man really showed us the difference between man or boys who fiddle with their guitar. Just mind-blowing.
The concert was so impressive, they easily switched between Blues, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Guns 'n Roses, Funk, African or South American beats. And the best thing about it was, that they did with such an ease and pleasure. The only Ego that needed attention was some guy with a green cap. The rest of the band understood that the audience was thrilled and in awe. Green cap guy stood on stage evoking/begging the audience to applaud. Very disturbing, because the audience’s vibe was all about a deep respect for this band. Some dude on stage begging for applause, devaluated the genuine clapping and cheering by the audience. The applause was for this extraordinary performance by a brilliant band, not for some egomaniac. Especially because the band was so involved, present and giving it all. It was not a bunch of ego's wanting to be famous or be in the hit parade, these guys were absolutely brilliant musicians and they connected with each other, letting their instruments communicate on the highest level.
(green cap guy spend rest of the night parading around, getting his picture taken. Very funny, I guess he didn’t really ‘get’ Dutch culture. In general, Dutchies lack random famous people admiration, they are not impressed by fame, however, genuine and brilliant musicians are well respected)
After that intense concert, Guestlove hosted the club night. He was great. That audience consisted of the regular crowd of young students, joined by a lot of gay tourists (Gay pride this coming weekend), regular tourists and people who stayed around after the concert. That very heterogeneous group fluently danced all night. Most people did not realize the DJ was Guestlove. And he didn't care, he was not about drawing attention at all. He mixed music genres from all decades of the last century and created a great atmosphere.
I am going to beg my neighbour and pray she is so kind to put me on the guest list again tomorrow. I want to see them again, to me this performance and night was legendary.

I saw The Roots about 8 years back. They were killin it. They had a guitarist/vocalist named Martin Luther playing with them back then and he was the gem! I don't think he plays with them anymore though, so they must have replaced one great guitarist with another.
I also went to the after party where Questlove DJ'ed and I loved his eclectic choices. There was no genre off limits. What I'd been waiting for in a DJ!
Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

It still cracks me up.
During the concert I didn't understand anything he was rapping, however, I did not hear 'f*ck' or "Ho", B*tch or any other usual terms of that genre.
I love hip-hop, however, I'm also righteous about degrading women by music, marketeers, or fanatic relious men.
So, oftentimes when I'm dancing on good music, I feel horrible that I dance to lyrics of selfobserbed men, singing all kind of excuses for, why they are entitled to verbally, or physically abuse women. Or, they sing about how great she is because she takes care of him, because he's to immature to take care of himself. Women in Hip-Hop are always related to how she is, or, is not, serving him. It would be great to listen to a Hip-Hop song about a woman who is apreciated or respected for who she is as an individual person, in stead of evaluated for how well she's serving some guy.
So, I'm happy to dance to hip-hop without feeling enraged inside about the lyrics.
Sorry, just had to vent it again. I really tried to restrain myself..... 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I can't find a clip of the solo of the guitarist. You would love it. If I do find it somewhere, I'll post it.
Yes, they are really an amazingly good band.
I feel so blessed to have seen them perform and Questlove DJ. I'm very grateful that I was there.
I'm still high from their concert. And, I'm left with have a foot injury, because I danced 7 hours in a row
Just went to the doctor for it, and he made me promise not to go to a Roots concert this week anymore. He actually googled them and I showed him a clip. Very funny, he has this very sophisticated accent, and he a is very decent man. I'm sure he doesn't know hip-hop at all, however, he did agree with me that they seemed to be a very good band.
BTW: this is a picture of the guitarist taken on wednesday:

This was on the Thursday, I wasn't there that night, but found a clip that shows how brilliant he is.
