Their '80s/'90s junts undermine the best of their '70s material.

Aside from Queen and Bruce Sprinsgteen's 80's work (and a couple of gems), 80's rock was even cheesier and worse than the 90's

early 90's rock was not cheesy imo late 90's though i won't defend..... Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

KISS is more of a party band where you put on a record in a party or go to a live show. If ya actually listen to their albums I'd say its all pure shit with one or two guilty pleasures.
KISS =

You have to admit though, they were a great party band with a great show. But I honestly couldn't and can't listen to their post-1970s material. Their '80s videos were alright enough for anyone's bisexual fantasies about Paul Stanley. [Edited 7/30/12 14:44pm]

Do you mean the "Dynasty" album? It's got 2 of my favorite Kiss (or is it KISS?) songs on it:

My brother wore his Kiss vinyl out ad nauseam in the 70s and although I liked a couple of their songs I couldn't stand to listen to anymore. And post-70s, forget it! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Paul has some serious gay face... it should be a crime to have that much gay face in one video
Even Pete Burns wants him to tone it down. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

OK, I'm not necessarily going to defend those particular songs but I will say that if you believe those lyrics are bad try picking any random Gene song from the albums Animalize, Asylum or Crazy Nights and compare. As bad as Paul's lyrics may have been he basically had to shoulder the load alone as he was receiving absolutely no help from Gene. Keep in mind that from 1984-1990 none of Gene's songs were released as singles, Paul's songs were the cream of that particular crop.

As much as i talk shit... i mean these songs are guility pleasures. I don't listen to Kiss much anymore, but after hearing these songs again there fun a tongue in cheek level to listen to. But some are just bad and Gene was just... well Gene has imo always been the worst kiss writer.
Burn Bitch Burn, Fits Like a Glove, No, No, No.. Secretly Cruel. Are all pretty bad on Gene's part
I'm weird when it comes to Kiss... i think there 70's stuff is just as cheesy & way overrated. But i love Dynasty which almost every KIss fan hates.
And i LOVE Revenge, Gene did his best writing on that album. The tracks are funny in a good way on that album. That was Kiss high point for me was Revenge Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I highly recommend that you give Creatures of the Night (1982) and Revenge (1992) a listen. The lyrics aren't great but probably slightly less embarrassing than the albums in between those two releases but the music is great. Probably as close as they came to recapturing the classic sound of the seventies.
Revenge is a fantastic album. The problem was that they had spent so long churning out mediocre albums that when they finally delivered something great no one was paying any attention. Based on the quality of the album Revenge should have been a massive hit.

Dynasty is pretty solid but that was arguably the album where Gene stopped pulling his weight. He only had two songs on it ("Charisma" and "X-Ray Eyes") and while neither of them are terrible they are fairly mediocre. On Dynasty for the first, and only, time Ace contributed more, and arguably better, songs than Gene ("Hard Times," "Save Your Love" and the Rolling Stones cover "2,000 Man").
One thing I never understood. Both Dynasty and Unmasked were produced by the same guy (Vini Poncia) but Dynasty still has a fairly hard sound but Unmasked is so sterile and pop sounding. Unmasked is a fairly bad album but with harder/tougher sounding production some of those songs could have been saved.

Unmasked is such a forgettable album..... i almost forget about it But it could have been saved!
Glad someone else think's dynasty is worthy hell Creatures Of The Night is a good ne & most Kiss fans agree on that. Music From The Elder is an absolute mess... but it has some gems on it. But it's still a mess
I actually like most of Animalize.. i think I've Had Enough is the best non released Kiss song of the 80's. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Maybe I shit on Gene too much but Animalize is one of the albums where it is pretty obvious that he was on autopilot. He had some decent songs on Creatures of the Night and Lick It Up but after that it was just a bunch of garbage from him until Revenge. I've actually burnt a disc of all of Gene's songs from 1984-1989 just to try to hear them separate from Paul's and it's a pretty terrible listen. There is the odd glimmer of a good song buried in some of them and maybe if he put a little more effort into some of them they would have turned out better but if you compare what Gene was contributing to what Paul was contributing Paul wins easily, his worst songs are on par with the best of what Gene was writing.

Not to invite more defecation Gene's direction....but what did you make of this little project in '04?:

I thought it was pretty good, at least by the standards of recent Kiss albums (Carnival of Souls, Psycho Circus). I won't pretend that it is something that I listen to often and I wouldn't say that it is great but there are some different sounding songs on there and I give him credit for stretching himself a little as a songwriter. I kind of like the laid back/acoustic stuff that was on his first solo album ("See You Tonite," "Always Near You/Nowhere To Hide," "Mr. Make Believe") and there is some similar material on Asshole.
Maybe I am reaching a bit here but I always thought that there was a different direction that Kiss could have gone in. With Destroyer they showed that they could do some very different material than what fans were accustomed to ("Great Expectations," "Beth" and, to a lesser degree "Flaming Youth"). Maybe it would have been awful and a commercial disaster but I think it would have been interesting to hear what they could have done if they had made another album with Bob Ezrin and really stretched themselves as songwriters. Instead they ditched Ezrin in favour of Eddie Kramer and basically went back to doing hard rock in the style of their first three albums. You very rarely get to hear it but there is more depth in both Paul and Gene than songs like "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Love Gun" would lead you to believe. They are good songwriters but I think they just got too comfortable writing simple rock songs and didn't push themselves to try new things.
