Has a Song In The Past 20 Or So Years.. This is by no means a music snob question but just like an opinion grabbing thread Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I'm gonna say no.
I was hoping "Seven Nation Army" would do it but no.

hmm.. that song had a huge impact in the rock world no doubt about it. I would say The White Stripes in general had an amazing impact in Rock. But beyond rock sadly no/:
I wanted to almost say a Kanye song.. but beyond rap i don't think his songs in all honesty impacted crazy.
Smells Like Teen Spirit impacted the entire music scene & not just rock or grunge. Hell you even get people like Kelly Rowland claiming it's her ''favorite song'' Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I think Straight Outta Compton had a huge impact & Nuthin But A G Thang was just one of many big songs that rode off that huge wave that song brought. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Hip hop artists seem to love Nirvana.
Though they weren't considered a crossover act, blacks really seem to appreciate them.
Same with Coldplay, which kinda surprises me because U2 never got shown that kind of love despite their gospel influences around the "Joshua Tree" "Rattle and Hum" period. I guess Coldplay have more of a prettier sound.
Oh there's always "Clocks".

I'm gonna get bashed for this but for my money "MMMBop" along with "Spirit" are THE quitessential records of the 90's!

That reminds me!
In the early 2000's on the news... everytime a montage of bad shit happened or a tragedy struck. They always played Clocks in that montage everytime something bad happened... i hear those piano chords & know a montage is coming up. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

D's "Brown Sugar"
It wasn't an instant impact, but the movement it influenced afteward was staggering, in terms of R&B. For a time, R&B was very proper production wise, and then he came in and put some stank on it.

I love D'Angelo but i find a strange way towards him...
He is underrated outside the org. But on the org i feel he is overrated... he has an impact and is insanly talented. But he only had 2 albums, i feel he is a wasted talent atm. Because he could have donw so much more. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Regardless of the quantity of his music, one could look at his contempraries and just take notice of the vast difference that occured before and after he emerged.
I agree though, he's still somewhat stuck in that "cult favorite" statue, and for a good reason. But that doesn't diminish his influence.
Another album(I couldn't come up with a song right now) is Dre's "Chronic". Who else revived George Clinton's legacy and made it cool for younger kids to check those Parliament/Funkadelic records? Granted, I'm not a fan of him, but I gotta give him credit for re-introducing the P-Funk in a new package.

What would qualify this. or any other question for that matter, as a "music snob question"?

I'd say R's 12 Play album ( no song in particular but probably Bump n Grind). While its influence was not as big as SLTS, the song basically defined how the slow-jam and non neo-soul R&B would sound for the decade.

Mc Hammer u can't touch this. Capsules that dance music (early to mid 90's) era well. Although SLTS is the essential sign of a change in rock music. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Cause some might take this as a ''music sucks now & nothing represents such & such'' Sometimes people go overboard with that.
So i was just stating that i'm not saying there hasn't been a song in the past 20 years that has had the impact of SMTS i was asking which song that could be Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I'm leaning towards no, certainly not in rock music. There have been plenty of huge hit songs over the last twenty years but I can't think of any that had a similar impact. This kind of underscores the argument that popular music has been stagnant since the mid-late nineties. We're desperate for something new but arguably music has been stuck in the same rut for over fifteen years.

It's ALL subjective. Smells Like Teen Spirit means absolutely nothing me to me and my crowd. There are many songs in many genres that had a big impact in the last couple of decades. Songs from Norah Jones, Kirk Franklin, Richard Smallwood, Boyz II Men, Whitney, Dr. Dre (as previously mentioned) Eminem, OUTKast (as mentioned), Dixie Chicks... I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I HATE SLTS/Nirvana/Grunge/90's rock but even I can admit the amount of shit that the song brought is insane
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I honestly think the closest that has come to it....
Is Outkast Hey Ya! & Gnarles Barkley ''Crazy''
Both these songs where a huge mix of sounds & both where played on tonf of different types of stations.
Hell EVERYONE seemed to love these 2 songs! even the intense rock crowds got behind these 2 jams, the pop crowd liked the song, the funk crowd, the hip-hop crowd.
I haven't seen a song come out since these 2 that crossed tons of boundaries like that.
But that's just my 2 cents! Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener
