How would you rate Steven Tyler as a singer? Would you say he is great or that he is just a good frontman? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

While not my cup of tea, I think he is a very good singer.

He has a "different" voice for sure. He's good for rock. I hated his take on the national anthem a few months ago though I don't think he's a "proper" singer, but I still like most of vocals.

Shard, what do you call proper singer? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

When it comes to ballads, he can pull it off. I think he goes along the lines of James Brown and Robert Plant, like he ain't a "sanger" but he's a "shouter" and he shouts effectively. That's my take on it. I always loved his voice though.

I Think he has a good ovice. it's rough sometimes. But it gives him that rock edge Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

For the style of music, he's pretty good. I don't think he has a true singers' voice, but for rock & roll, it's perfect.

Emotional, specific, strong enough ... yes, I think he's good. Not a great voice, but very decent
PS I think Robert Plant one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music

I always make jokes about him, but I've always loved Crazy and Walk This Way...and this week I discovered Dream On on the radio, loved the opening chords instantly (it's their first song) and now I can't stop playing it and love the lyrics, can relate to them. I'm going to be checking for their earlier material soon, he sounds really good. Funny you started this topic, I was going to start a thread about Dream On and saw this. [Edited 7/27/12 9:58am]

Well I'm not sure how many actual notes he can hit-he's certainly not tone deaf, but he's not always on key, and I don't think his voice sounds good when he sings songs that require vocal training. He's good at yelling in key, which is needed for rock. I've heard him do "Amazing Grace" and "Lean On Me" for example, and I just don't think his voice is suited for those songs. I certainly prefer Tyler's voice to Mick Jagger's though. I don't think Jagger is a good singer at all.

Definitely one of the great rock vocalists.
But his singing is very specific to the style of Aerosmith's music. Because he is a musical guy and has great rhythm, I am sure he could sing other styles, but not nearly as convincingly. And certainly not after all the roughing up of his vocal cords that he's surely done over the years. [Edited 7/27/12 10:54am] My Legacy

way better than mick vocally, and I like his high screaming notes early in his career when they were in tune...and when mj screams, sometimes he's very slightly off too, but it works, same with steven

i think it fits Aerosmith perfectly. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

A hot ghetto mess if I go by his performance on Idol recently.

He's not someone who could sing without music and still sound good, but he goes great with the music.

It's interesting if you listen to the first two Aerosmith albums, he really sounds quite different. It wasn't until Toys in the Attic/Rocks that he really started sounding like himself. On the first album in particular he sounds very different.
