After several days of intense speculation, Fox announced at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills Monday that Mariah Carey has officially signed on as an American Idol judge for the show’s upcoming 12th season.

“I am so excited to be joining Idol,” Carey shared via a phone call to Fox boss Kevin Reilly, just seconds after he shared the news with the TCA crowd. “I wanted to be there today and I wish I could have been there myself to tell you. I can’t wait to get started in a couple months.”

Idol‘s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe weighed in on the very public search for new judges after a TCA press tour panel for fellow Fox reality program So You Think You Can Dance. “I would like to see the judges change every year. It’s horrible to be in this position where you guys [in the press] are asking, ‘Who’s it going to be?’ and there are thousands of names being thrown out,” said Lythgoe. “And it’s unfair on negotiations. You can’t negotiate with somebody in a public marketplace.”

Carey’s addition to the Idol judges’ table comes in the wake of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler recently annoucning plans to exit Fox’s ratings behemoth after respective two-year stints on the panel. What’s more, Carey’s Idol gig creates something of a competitive conundrum in her own household: Husband Nick Cannon hosts NBC’s category competitor America’s Got Talent, which typically overlaps with Idol for a week or two in May.

Although I probably won't be tuning in, I must say that Mariah seems to be perfect for the show. It should also be interesting to see her and Randy interact considering their history together.

I wonder if it's too late to save the show from it's descending trend though. Seems like every year their numbers get lower and lower. I'm sure at first they'll have a huge jump in their ratings but will they be able to keep them?

I was crackin' up when I saw that preview of the X-Factor with Spears having the gall to tell one of the contestants how horrible they sounded. I was like, what the fuck? Well, if that ain't the pot talkin' about the kettle!!! Simon Cowell has finally hit rock bottom.

Just a day or so before being named the newest "American Idol" judge,Mariah Carey was hanging out with some of her biggest competition ... "X Factor" judge L.A. Reid.

Mimi and L.A. were spotted cruising around the Hamptons together this weekend and sources tell us he was key in convincing her to take the "Idol" gig.

Although they are now on rival TV shows, the music heavyweights go way back as Reid used to be the CEO of Mariah's record label.

At this rate, it won't be long before Mariah and Xtina are palling around town together. Or not.

Love Mariah but its a day late and a dollar short. Do people tune in for AI anymore?

I'm more interested in the new album than these news.

Yeah, good luck to The Voice. They're doing two seasons of that a year now! And they are going to introduce spinning chairs to the battle rounds cause that's when the ratings start to go down. Good luck NBC.
