George Michael first hit in July 1982 in Britain with the song "Wham Rap" with Wham, he was essentially the singer and songwriter, Club Tropicana was their stateside breakthru I think, by then (Aug 83) they had 2 further hits in the UK, Young Guns - Go For it and Bad Boys (Not be confused with Miami Sound Machine)

My list

1.Do you really want to hurt me by Culture Club (Although White Boy was a near miss a few months earlier)

2.Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics, their first and best hit (Although Annie Lennox was the singer in the Tourist #5 UK 1979 Hit remake of I only wanna be with you by Dusty Springfield), and the Eurythmics had released an album in 1981 called "In the Garden" which flopped.

3.The Glamorous Life by Sheila E (Had to include a Prince related one or 2)

4. Orinoco Flow by Enya (Earlier hits I don't know of)

5. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor (She had an album in 1988 I think, but it didn't hit)

6. The Look - Roxette (Hardly a group I love, but this was their best song by a long shot)

7. The Power - Snap (Their first hit was their best, later releases not as good, but Rhythm is a dancer is a close second)

8. Keep on Movin - Soul 2 Soul (Although Back to life comes close)

Yes, the position in the charts (not just in the U.S.) have a value.
But I wrote my reason - with this song (and video), most people associate A-ha, the song is very well known in the world. wink
Although it is not my favorite song in their discography.

Ok got ya smile

FWIW, I'm a huge a-ha fan — although not as fanatical as you are — and I still think "Take on Me" is their best song.

I disagree. Commercially, "Karma Chameleon" was a bigger hit. Musically, I'd argue that "Time (Clock of the Heart)" edges "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" as the group's crowning achievement.

These songs are not my favorite, but the the most famous and associative hits of these artists.
The Jackson 5 - "I Want You Back"
A-ha - "Take on Me"
George Michael - "Careless Whisper"
Spice Girls - "Wannabe"
Kylie Minogue - "Locomotion"

i don't agree about the j5. "abc" and "i'll be there" are every bit the quality and equal to "i want you back". i hear all three of these songs on a regular basis. in fact, i hear "abc" being used in advertising a lot more than "i want you back". "i'll be there" became such a classic that it went to number #1 all over again with mariah. definitely don't agree that the boys never topped that first single.

and i agree with someone who mentioned minogue's "can't get you out of my head". at least here in the states, "locomotion" had been long forgotten, along with her, and now there is no way that "locomotion" hasn't been topped with "cgyoomh".

"careless whisper" was billed here in the states as wham featuring george michael, so i don't regard it as a proper solo hit for george. however, if you're going to call it a george michael solo song, i think "faith" and "i want your sex" topped "careless whisper" by a long shot.

the only one i agree with is "wannabe".

I have already answered in this thread about "I want you back" and "Take on Me", and "Locomotion".
In addition, your opinion is no more objective than mine, it is also subjective. razz
