Artists That Never Topped Their First Single

Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time

- 14 years, after countless hits that came after that are all lovable, I think ...Baby One More Time still stands above everything else, including Toxic & Gimme More. That piano three-part motif at the beginning, "Dun Dun Dun." It gets you every time. As Blender Magazine put it, it "makes its presence known in exactly one second."

Mariah Carey - Vision Of Love

- The sheer definition of melisma. Wonderful, raw lyrics. She never out-did her debut for me. Even with songs like Vanishing, the octaves of Emotions, Forever, Underneath The Stars...all wonderful yet lacking something that she started off with.

I immediately thought of these two. Thoughts?

Anybody got any more?

At the time of THIS post, Carly Rae Jepsen has yet to top her 1st and only single (not counting her regional releases before this mainstream hit):

These songs are not my favorite, but the the most famous and associative hits of these artists.
The Jackson 5 - "I Want You Back"
A-ha - "Take on Me"
George Michael - "Careless Whisper"
Spice Girls - "Wannabe"
Kylie Minogue - "Locomotion"

Well with a-ha you have to mean chart wise in the states? cause as far as material, they topped Take on Me with everything that came after with the next 8 albums

Whitney Houston. I never thought anything else she recorded was as pretty as You Give Good Love.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yes, the position in the charts (not just in the U.S.) have a value.
But I wrote my reason - with this song (and video), most people associate A-ha, the song is very well known in the world. wink
Although it is not my favorite song in their discography.

there was a tv programme here in the uk last week which was a countdown of the greatest number 1s and this was in the top 10. but it was revealed that initially this song was first offered to uk boy band 5ive who turned it down. i don't think it would've been anywhere near as big as Britney's video was a huge reason why it was as big as it was.

Depends on the definition of topped. I think OIDIA definitely topped BOMT and is Brit's real signature song.

Laura Branigan : GLORIA

she had a bunch of hits.. but this song stands above them ..

i bounce right back to the 80s when this comes on

speaking of Gloria..

probably Gloria Estefan too... she was huge.. but Conga is her signature

That's not her first single. Miami Sound Machine's first record came out around 1976.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

And that's only because that song came at such a pivotal time that anything else they released were a bonus. That's how great they were.

@LiLi1982......Locomotion was not Kylie's only hit in the USA. CGYOOMH & Love At First Sight were also popular in the mid-2000's.

No, Kylie really topped her first single with "Can't get you", it was a much bigger hit.

It went number 1 in 40 countries. Not sure you would say it's not well known in the world.

Kylie = Can't get you... lol

huh? their first four singles were no. #1 hits, so what do u mean...? sales wise? because if being no. #1 is the pinnacle for a song, they had several of those so it then becomes a matter of opinion. the thread lost credibility with this post to me. i could've crossed off all of those, they all had lots of hits after those songs

You catch the essence of this thread?? lol

I did not enter acts with one hit (one hit wonder), there were many. Each of the artists of my list - a big star with a few big hits!!
I want you back - the legendary song, it always takes some place in the list of top 100 greatest songs of all time. This is their biggest and most influential hit, although, of course, is not the only one (as well as for other artists in this list) wink
