INXS set to release KICK 25th Anniversary 3cd/1dvd package September 17th

Though Inxs had just hit the top 5 with What U Need on the "Listen Like Theives" album in 1985 and had that album near platnum sales, it was INXS next album KICK that launched them to heights many bands never come close too. And now 25 years since its release and sadly though 15 years after the death of Michael Hutchence, Inxs is set to release KICK with a 3cd expanded edition Plus 1 dvd too in the Deluxe Package, through their own label brand distributed by Universal

On September 17th 2012 INXS will be celebrating the 25th year anniversary of ‘KICK’ by releasing special Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Digital versions of this landmark album. The Super Deluxe Edition will feature amazing unseen personal home movie documentary footage. A taster of this footage is hosted here..

Released in 1987, ‘KICK’ propelled INXS to a new level, cementing their reputation and firmly establishing the band as a force to be reckoned with worldwide. Kick changed everything, becoming a slow-burning phenomenon that thanks to its trailblazing lead single, ‘Need You Tonight’, broke out around the world over the next 18 months. If ever a record embodied the oxymoron ‘complex simplicity’, Kick, the sixth album by INXS – Michael Hutchence, Andrew Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, Tim Farriss, Garry Gary Beers and Jon Farriss – is it. It’s an album so full of surprise, that even from a distance of 25 years, when you listen to it, you’re still waiting and wondering what exactly is about to happen next. The album spawned 4 US top 10 singles in a row including hits such as ‘New Sensation’, ‘Devil Inside’, and the timeless ballad ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, alongside fan favourites ‘Guns In The Sky’ and ‘Wild Life’. Certified eight times platinum in the US alone, Kick sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

INXS’s most world- renowned, career defining and influential album release to date remains a true classic. The 25th anniversary celebrates Kick’s remarkable story and its lasting importance, influence and inspiration on today’s music. Illustrated by the fact that so many artists are still covering and sampling tracks from the record to this day. From Ben Harper’s funky take on ‘Devil Inside’, to Professor Green and Liv Tyler’s renditions of ‘Need You Tonight’, (the former of which reached top 3 in the UK charts, while the latter was recently used as the synch for the recent global Givenchy campaign) Kick has inspired a variety of artists in the last 25 years including Snow Patrol, John Mayer, Beck, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Natalie Imbruglia, and Bono . It has also been widely reported that Adele’s “favourite song of all time” is ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, and rumour has it she has recorded a version of this song for her 3rd album.

For a group that has enjoyed the highest of highs and the deepest of lows, Kick cannot fail to have a special niche in the hearts of those who made it: Kick is a fabulous collision of style, substance, musicianship, hard work, integrity, production, marketing, and passion – everything that one of the greatest albums of its era should be.

The 2012 the 25th anniversary release of ‘KICK’ will include a Deluxe edition, a Super Deluxe edition and two Download editions. The Deluxe edition set will include 2 CDs, the second featuring remixes and bonus material. The Super Deluxe Edition package of 3 CDs and a DVD will feature demos, remixes, video promos, and unseen documentary footage. It will come with a 64 page art book, which will include never before seen handwritten lyrics directly from Michael’s family archives, unseen photos, diaries, and interview with each band member and producer of the record Chris Thomas. For nostalgia appeal, a KICK sticker sheet and original tour poster for your bedroom walls will also be included. There will also be a Heavyweight Red Coloured Vinyl Limited Edition available.

With a career spanning over thirty years, INXS are one of the biggest rock groups in the world today. The Sydney based band originally made waves in 1982, both down under and the USA, with their chart topping single, ‘The One Thing’. Since the release of ‘The One Thing’ INXS has sold a staggering 30 plus million records worldwide, achieved 6 consecutive Top 10 UK and US albums, 23 UK hit singles, countless awards from peers and fans alike, and have performed over 5000 shows to over 25 million people in over 40 countries. The Bands album Platinum, ‘Greatest Hits’ has gone Top 10 in over 14 countries around the world – the majority of which went # 1. The stats speak for themselves: INXS are Australia’s greatest music export.

“By the time we got to Kick we really felt we were in our place in our time. We had been very fortunate to be nurtured by people of great calibre, so why not go the whole distance and really explore, gloves are off, dogs are off the chain, let’s go for it.”
Andrew Farriss, 2012

“We were so caught up in what we were doing we didn’t think about sounding contemporary or not. This slinky rock and roll is what we do.”
Tim Farriss, 2012

“At last we’re not the underdogs”
Michael Hutchence 1989

The 25th anniversary editions of INXS’ ‘KICK’ will be released by Universal Music on 17th September 2012.

There are different ways to define "great" but in terms of units moved isn't Kylie Minogue greater?

Kylie never broke the US like INXS did. So no i dont think she's as big as inxs at their peak.

If you consider them Australian, the Bee Gees are surely the greatest.

A certain Ms. Newton-John would be ahead of Kylie anyway, right?

Inxs has tons of stuff that hasn't been released and alot if video footage not on DVD either. As for Kylie she never had that huge USA takeover that Inxs did.

True, Kylie never burned as brightly as Inxs did with Kick but I was talking about overall sales. I think she has sold more.

I'm disappointed that some of you are saying Inxs are greater simply because they had more success in America. It's a great big world and there are more markets to consider than America. razz

Well i know all about the "world market" since being an a-ha fan from day one till it ended that band sold 41 million albums worldwide, 1.5 million was in the USA so clearly they were a "world band" and their final tour took them places that alot of artists never venture too, Kylie is a huge artist and more known than INXS, INXS was a band built up from day one, which if you look at most artists back then U2,REM,Prince NONE were hits till well into their 4-6th albums, INXS was big in quite a few areas in the world, there tours for KICK and X took them everywhere, and their earlier ones were huge in terms of how many dates they could play, Where as today you have an artist go on 10 gigs and they complain of exhaustion, and INXS were doing 150 gigs at least a year, so they were bred for the touring. INXS hasnt sold more than Kylie INXS tops out in the 35 million range while Kylie is well into the 60-70 million range worldwide. INXS to me was a band that really came from nothing and shot to stardom through alot of hard work and touring, the sales came and went and came and went, Kick was their "Purple Rain" moment, and it for a time captured the entire world, which is something very few get to have.

As for them being greater or whatever they do totally different kinds of music, plus one is a band and one is on her own, Musically i cant compare, to me INXS from that era is one of the best bands ever because they totally mixed up the sounds and overall that band of players was top notch, KYLIE i like but im not wild about because im not really a dance music fan so i cant comment fairly on her

"I Need You Tonight"/"Mediate" is still one of the best two-sided rock 'n' roll junts I ever heard in my life and don't get me started on "Devil Inside", "New Sensation" and "Never Tear Us Apart". Michael Hutchence's voice was at one soothing and soulful. He was like Jim Morrison mixed with Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Mick Jagger. lol

Michael was effortless he could just wander in and perform and you'd think he was practicing the performance for ages and yet he just walked on stage and did it. Nothing was hidden with Michael, he was the LAST great frontman, i havent seen a band come since that has had a frontman that could come close to being able to touch an audience. Andrew Farriss of INXS once said he had a unique thing of making someone in the back of a stadium feel like they were in the front, and the reason why was Michael had bad vision, beyond 30 feet and he had issues seeing so he would gaze and look deep into crowds cause he really couldnt see

She has sold more. But again, if you're looking at sales, she's behind the Bee Gees (if you want to count them as Australian), AC/DC, and ONJ.

But none of them were actually born in Australia, the U.K. can make some kind of claim on all of them. I think you need to put one of these "*" next to their names as far as them being Australian.

Back on topic, does anyone have any opinions about the 2011 remasters? I've got the single disc Rhino versions (I think they were released in 2002) of Kick, X and Welcome to Wherever You Are and the original cd releases of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts and Elegantly Wasted. I'm quite happy with those and will not be "upgrading" but I'm curious about their earlier albums. I think I have a copy of The Swing somewhere but otherwise I don't have any of their pre Kick albums. Listen Like Thieves is probably the one I should get first, is there anything special about the remaster or will the original cd suffice? I know there are no bonus tracks, is there anything to the packaging/liner notes in the 2011 remasters or are they pretty basic?

As far as u know the 2011 stuff wasn't anything special I don't think the band was involved with it so there are no new tracks interviews etc... They did that with a few a few years back that had things like that but are out of print now, also they just reissued the Live Baby Live DVD through their own site and label that has added stuff.
