I always believed that was the reason. And he was licking his lips like a million times before he said another verse. Another thing about LL was as the years went on, he still seemed to be stuck at 17. It's like he had a stunt growth and remained the age he was when he released "Radio" and "Rock the Bells", like he never seem to reach maturity as a rapper and as he reached his 40s and was still trying to compete with younger rappers, he just looked silly so eventually he decided to take a break from it, which was a good decision on his part.
