RIP Jose Roberto Bertrami.

Jose Roberto Bertrami: keyboardist of legendary brazilian band Azymuth passed away a few days ago..of liver failure.I discovered Azymuth on a local jazz station.I heard this song and taped it off the radio back in 98'. I was on the internet in 01'..Tryin to figure out who made it..The dj i thought said the group's name was Asthma.i typed that in..nothing..So i typed in the song" may I have this dance"? on All Music Guide. Bingo! I was shocked to see three Brazilian guys .lol..Just goes to show music has no color as i learned earlier in life. I started to download their music.all i could find. The grooves were spacy, funky, smooth, jazzy with a brazilian flavor rolled up into one..So then I started to buy their records. Then cds.Gettin deep and heavy into them. The grooves and sound were addicting and so intoxicating..Bertrami's mellow spacey keys.In the vein of fellow Brazilian's Deodato.Yet u could feel the Hancock and Duke influences throughout.Alex malheiros' funky bass playin style stinging and guiding the groove. Ivan (Mamao)Conti drivin the drums and percussion. This was now my fav jazz group overtakin another of mines at the time Spyro Gyra. Ever since purchasing 2002's Partido Nova..i been on a quest to hear all of their music.Always looking forward to when the next album was coming.lol.So lil did I or other Azymuth fans know that 2011's album "Aurora" would be their last one together. I was listening to it just the other day.Thinkin

when are they gonna come out with a new album? Im on youtube last nite listening to a latin funk band. I see his name on related videos posted by his record company. So I go and click on it and listen to the song.1946-2012 flashed on the video.Im like why are they showing that for a new song?Unless he-No! So I looked it up and I found out that he indeed passed on. It saddens me to say hes gone.Because he was the heart of the group. And the group's music has meant alot to me the last 11yrs.One of my fav Artists.Top Ten even Hell maybe Five.Azymuth has played together for over 40yrs and 30 albums. So my condolences go out to Alex and Ivan as well as Bertrami's family and friends. And to his other fans like me.He was a legend in Brazil.legend in jazz..legend in music..Gone but not forgotten. I suggest to all or anybody who hasnt heard of Bertrami or Azymuth to look them up.Funk, acid jazz, downtempo,Samba or Samba Doido(Crazy Samba the group liked to call it).Its all in there..Dating back to the Early 70's.They were influenced by what was happenin over here in the United States. Took heed and blended it all up and made it their own..Influencing others. So many Beautiful songs... Argubably the music they've done in the last 15yrs is just as good if not better than their 70's and 80's work.

Once Again,
RIP Jose Roberto Bertrami

Azymuth has done some really nice albums.
Almost all of them with Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboard.

A couple from his solo albums...

...Laranjeiras (from Aventura - 2009) & Valle Brothers (from Things Are Different - 2001)

Had one of the Never Enough Rhodes sets playing and Azimuth's Tempos Atraz came on. Lovely Rhodes and synth work by Bertrami.

is only one defense: the creative act.
