Katy Perry's 'Part of Me' Opens to $10 Million in Ticket Sales by Phil Gallo, L.A. | July 09, 2012
How does first-week box office stack up to other 3D concert films?
Artists in this Article
Michael Jackson
Jonas Brothers
Miley Cyrus
Katy Perry
Justin Bieber
"Katy Perry: Part of Me" attracted enough paying customers in its opening weekend to make the top 10, but missed crossing a threshold that makes concert-based biographies a viable genre.
Opening the day after a national holiday, Paramount's 3D Perry film grossed an estimated $10.2 million over four days on 2,730 screens, the studio estimated. Its weekend gross was $7.1 million.
Those numbers pale in comparison to Paramount release last year of "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," which pulled in $29.5 million the weekend before Valentine's Day. It would go on to make $73 million, making it the top film in the genre, according to data collected by BoxOfficeMojo.com.
"Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds" is the biggest opener among all concert films, grossing $31 million on a mere 683 screens in February 2008. "Michael Jackson's This is It," with a $23.2 million opening, and "The Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience" ($12.5 million) also bested Perry's opening tally. The Jackson and Jonas films, however, opened on more than 3,000 screens each.
Most of these films have a shelf life of about five weeks and - at best - drop about 50% each successive week at the box office. The Perry film will likely end up in the $16 million to $19 million range, placing it between "Madonna: Truth or Dare" at $15 million and the $19.2 million the Jonas Brothers film eventually grossed.
The Bieber film has also grossed $23.9 million in DVD sales, according to figures tallied by TheNumbers.com. The Jonas Brothers film did $9 million.
Perry's film did $2.3 million in foreign territories, BoxOfficeMojo reported, but did not break down any specifics. At best, non-domestic grosses of concert films represent 25 percent of the pop-star films' take.
Costs associated with these films are, by moviemaking standards, low: Budget for "Part of Me" was a reported $12 million, "Never Say Never" was $13 million.
If the Perry film is a warning sign, expect more concert-bio films focusing on teen and 'tween sensations rather than acts with a bit of history and success on the charts. Sony is expected to put a One Direction film in theaters before Thanksgiving, which would have a draw similar to Bieber and Cyrus.
Metallica is the next rock band heading into the concert documentary world. They will be filming their shows in Mexico City in August for a theatrical release.

Her movie's ranked #8 though. Far from modest. No one wanted to see her unless it was her tits in 3D and they're big enough. [Edited 7/9/12 17:07pm]

How did the Hannah Montana movie opening beat out the This Is It it movie opening? Guess I didnt realize Hannah/Miley had so many fans And dear lord please NO! To the One Direction movie! What is up with these concert/documentary movies on these bubblegum teen pop artists that havent even been in the industry for a whole decade? I get it, they're massively popular, but they havent done anything GREAT or been in the business long enough to warrant a big screen documentary about their life story or their rise to fame But I understand, its all about the almighty dollar. The studio and record executives see a prime opportunity to cash in on their instant popularity and they know that the young teen and pre-teen fan base will put up their $$ to see their idol on the big screen. They believe in that "strike while the iron is hot" philosophy. MJ L.O.V.E: https://www.facebook.com/...689&type=2 / YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/us...nderSilent

well first of all numbers dont matter with movies, it really comes down to this which is something NO ONE everlooks at. FIRST how much did this film cost to make, to break even a film has to double what it cost to make it, NEXT how many screens are u showing on, NO ONE EVER looks at this, but how many asses are u putting in seats films that make big $$$ play every 2 feet of theatre space, a film like Savages by oliver stone makes nothing but per screen is killing spiderman 3, so u gotta read more into numbers with movies. bottom line is what they want, factor in the dvd release of katy perry eventually and im sure this film will about 10times what it cost to make "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

"This Is It" was released for a reason- to have the world see what MJ was planning since we didn't have the chance to because he died now people are following this concert movie idea. Its just the business trying to suck money out of people's pockets. And no, Justin Beiber is not the leader of this concert movie trend, MJ is because even though Justin's grossed more money, it wasn't just teenage girls who came to see This Is It. This Is It caused everyone to gather and remember MJ and to see the charisma he had before he was murdered. So while JB was more sucesssfull financially, MJ's movie actually had a message. People need to stop trying to follow what MJ did, and just be themselves.

I agree.Katy Perry has only done two albums, right? How the hell is she gonna come out with a concert/backstage documentary film?? It's ridiculous. There was a time when artists had to accomplish big things, make a huge impact and have several huge albums and tours before they would do a concert film. This Katy Perry film should have just been a bonus DVD included in a deluxe reissue of her album. They're trying to make her more important/influential/groundbreaking than she really is.

Exactly. Perry's film had a production budget of $12M. Once you factor in international box office revenues, the film will recoup a large percentage of its marketing and productions costs.

I took my neice to see this tonight and its actually a pretty good film. I will say she doesn't shy away from the Russel Brand break up and overall she comes off really real. No make up, no wigs just herself. I was actually impressed at how raw she was. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.
