New Freddie Mercury Doc on DVD
July 11, 2012
A new documentary about late Queen singer Freddie Mercury titled The Great Pretender will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 25.
The video, put together by the production team responsible for Queen's recent Days of Our Lives doc, contains rare footage including early interviews with Mercury, TV performances, concert clips and video-shoot outtakes. The flick also features new conversations with Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, band manager Jim Beach and opera singer Montserrat Caballé, who collaborated with Mercury on his 1987 side project, Barcelona.
Among the intriguing segments featured in The Great Pretender are footage of Mercury and Rod Stewart recording a demo version of their unreleased 1984 track "Another Piece of My Heart" and a clip of Freddie and Michael Jackson singing their unreleased collaborative tune "There Must Be More to Life than This."
Prior to the release of the DVD and Blu-ray, The Great Pretender will be given a premiere screening on September 6 at the British Academy of Film and Television Association.
In conjunction with the video, a special edition of Barcelona will be issued featuring a version of the album re-recorded with an 80-piece orchestra. In addition, a companion Great Pretender book will be published in September.
