"Make Me A Believer",from this album,is my favorite Luther Vandross song music

That cut has been on heavy rotation lately. The definition of SMOOTH. This album should've put him into the stratosphere. This album is filled with "should've been" smash hits. "I'll Let You Slide" would've broke him into the MTV generation, with a cool video to boot. Guess Luther, Epic and their Black music division didn't have high hopes. Reading about how they dealt with this album is truly sad...

it's hard to pick a favorite Luther Vandross album, but for me,it would be either Never Too Much or Forver,For Always,For Love. Those two albums are perfect.

and yet,my favorite Luther song is from the album that came next lol

Someone once said it best: When Luther broke through in the 80s, he picked up the torch that Teddy and Marvin were about to pick up at that point, but tragedy warmed over with them. You just can't go wrong with Luther back in the 80s. Never Too Much is one excellent breakthrough album that many tend to forget. It is perfect, from start to finish.

If you've ever read this book,

you kinda get a well-written narrative of what was happening with Luther and many artists at that point. You have well-recorded and engineered recordings that were expertly performed and produced for many audiences, but somehow they weren't expertly promoted by labels. Epic Records really missed the boat with alot of their Black artists and Luther was no exception.

It's definitely crazy on what Luther had to endure. 15 years before he broke out with Never Too Much. That guy was surviving and hungry. Just a shame that Epic Records just took a long time to "push that button"--if you know what I mean. That was something that haunted Luther for a while, and eventually played a major part in his changing weight over the years.

It's not hard for me - 1985's "The Night I Fell in Love" is Luther's Purple Rain, IMO. Shit is tight from beginning to end. It doesn't get any better than "If Only for One Night".

When I lived on Long Island, I'd take my folks to see Luther at Westbury Music Fair all the time. Always put on a fantastic show. Sometimes Sinbad or Kim Coles would open for him. In 1988 he was on tour with Anita Baker. I caught the show at Madison Square Garden, but Anita was 'sick' and couldn't perform. I found out later what the deal was between those two. smile

Now when it comes to Luther's legendary run from '81-'89, that album is the one that crystallizes everything Luther is. Every song on that album is a gem. I get memories of my cousin playing this album constantly at every summer family gathering or in the car. Just an unbeatable album.

Of course we can't forget the work Luther did with Change. I still rock that album as much as I did in 1980. "The Glow of Love" and "Searching" - timeless!

I'd probably rank them:
The Night I Fell In Love
Never Too Much
Busy Body
Give Me The Reason
Any Love
Power Of Love
I've never been a big fan of Forever...

I'm more a fan of the work he did with Change and with The Gregg Diamond band and also his productions of Cheryl Lynn and Aretha Franklin than of his solo work. As for his solo work, I mainly only like his first two albums.

Andy is a four letter word.
