Herbie had issues like this at one point. People came to see him do the Headhunters material, and he was trying some newer innovative stuff. People shit on him.

I wonder if D's people knew what they were in for when they decided to book him for the Essence Music Festival. Unless you're playing something familiar, they're gonna be looking at you like they did Lauryn Hill when she did the same thing...

A lot of times, the "crowd" are a bunch of morons who should shut up and let an artist create.

Too many people are just like, "Take your shirt off, get in your cage and dance, monkey"! "Nothing too complicated, just the exact same steps you were doing 10 years ago, and nothing different"!

For some reason I'm just not worried about him going over with the Essence Festival crowd.

We know he's back in form.

In this instance I'm glad D is doing something that is making folks feel uncomfortable. lol

"He tells me of a music teacher who told him that when classical composers like Beethoven made music, "people didn't understand it, and it got bad reviews," D says, recalling how his teacher said Beethoven responded: "He's like, 'I don't make music for you. I make music for the ages.' "

His music is not for a simple-minded Essence crowd who'd rather listening to the cock-a-doodle-doo-ing of Trey Songz, or any other person who refuses to recognize the musical genius that is Michael Eugene Archer. He makes music for the ages.

.....

I have mixed feelings about this. When i saw Bob Dylan people where insanly pissed(like they have been over the years) Because he doesn't play all his huge hits. That mofo has been around 5 decades with lots of songs... let him play some new songs off his new album.

D'Angelo has 2 albums... 2 FUCKING ALBUMS

And so far no 100% set plans. With high tickets & huge insane hype D'angelos people are killing me lol

If i went to see D and he just played covers, a new song, covers then played idk Brown Sugar, Lady or Untitled.

I mean D really didn't have like that many hits, he is more of a albums artist's. So he should be playing as many tracks as he can off vodoo or Brown Sugar or people gonna be pissed lol

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

He did play old album stuff. Feel Like Makin Love, Chicken Grease, SDMF, folks didn't know it. So what good does it do?

I think D'Angelo is going to be all right. I like the way D'Angelo is positioning himself. Starting with the BET Awards and now at Essence Music Fest, he clearly wants to differentiate himself as a musician and show the gulf that is exists between D'Angelo and dudes like Chris Brown, Usher and Trey Songz. D'Angelo got the support of his band and his real fans and like somebody just wrote, other artists have been met with disapproval for playing music fans don't want to hear.

I hope D'Angelo keeps playing what he wants to play. I always felt that had D'Angelo regularly put out albums maybe the course of contemporary Black music would sound less processed and much more soulful. I think its telling that if D played at a music festival like Glastonbury Music Festival,, where the crowd is mostly white , they would at least give the music a chance.

confused Well damn.

That stumps me.... i mean imo people going to see D'angelo i imagine had the albums. Or at leats had one or the other.... i mean D'Angelo only had 3 top 40 solo hits if i am correct. I personally wouldn't pay 120 to hear 3 songs i know then smh at the rest eek

Up until last week at the BET Awards, that he was doing. He was playing Bonnaroo, he was playing in Europe. Those were mostly audience that would be more receptive to him stretching out and not confining him to just playing the hits and taking his shirt off.

Not because the crowd was mostly white, because I'm sure if a white artist played a pop festival and did what D's doing, he'd get the same reaction.

D went to Europe for the same reasons Prince, Jimi Hendrix, MJ, and Marvin went.

Black Artists are in such a box in this country. You're either hip-hop or R&B, and you can't do anything too unfamiliar.

Yeah if you ain't at least invested in an artist like that, you're gonna draw blanks from what they do play. With me, after hearing it in the audience, I'd go home and find the song on YouTube or something. lol

Exactly. Who gives a f*** what that crowd of probably-morons thinks.

I've seen the footage of him recently and he is back in great form! If they aren't enjoying it, that's on them. Fools.

Bring on the south pacific tour, D!

It wasn't just that he was doing songs that folks were unfamilliar with. I was on Facebook and a bunch of women were complaining that he kept his clothes on.

I'm thinking "Do you know anything about this cat at all other than a music video that came out 12 years ago"?

That's all they know him by. That's how it's always been. He will always be known as "the guy that took his shirt off in that video". That's why his tour to promote "Voodoo" had mostly women because they wanna see him rip that shirt off. When your career is basically left with that trademark, that's all anyone of that caliber will expect from you.

Roland Martin is a funny dude, if he thinks that Charlie Wilson is a better act than D'Angelo. I've seen some clips of his performances lately and there is no way that he compares to Lauryn Hill at this stage in his career. D'Angelo is touring regularly and he may not be playing all of his hits, his growth as a musician is transparent which is more than I can say about "Ms. Can Barely Play A Chord On Her Guitar".

1st off, Roland Martin is as country as a syrup sandwich and his ascot is on too tight. He's the same man that got suspended from CNN because he said that if a dude is "soft", you need to whup his ass.

So, you can tell he's not comfortable with anything other than what he's used to.

He has all these sayings on Twitter about what "real bruhs" do and don't do like they don't wear Pink.
