Another Victim: Rihanna sues ex-accountants, claims she lost millions

Rihanna sues ex-accountants, claims she lost millions

Rihanna is suing her former accountants, claiming that they mismanaged her finances and caused her to lose out on tens of millions of dollars.

In a filing made in New York on July 3 under her real name, Robyn Fenty, the 24-year-old Grammy-winning pop singer is seeking an unspecified amount in damages from accountancy firm Berdon LLP and two of its accountants, whom she had fired in 2010. The parties have not commented.

Rinanna and tour company, tourihanna, claim that the firm caused "significant financial losses" by charging "exorbitant" commissions totalling tens of millions of dollars from Rihanna's "Last Girl on Earth" 2010 tour and that the accountants earned more than Rihanna from its total revenues - 22 percent versus 6 percent paid to her, according to the Associated Press.

The singer's lawsuit also claims that Berdon mishandled her foreign and domestic taxes, which has led to an IRS audit, and failed to monitor unpaid song royalties.

The singer has achieved worldwide fame with over five successful studio albums with hits such as "Umbrella," "Rude Boy," "Hard," "What's my Name?" and her 2012 hit "We Found Love." The singer has been nominated for 18 Grammy awards in her seven year career, taking home five in various categories such as Best Rap Song and Best Dance Recording.

According to Forbes, Rihanna has made $53 million dollars as of May 2012.

Her full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty. She just used her middle name as a stage name.

Sad thing is it usually takes an incident like this before artists like her really start to look carefully at the contracts and agreements they get into.

Better that she find out now about what had been going on with her former accounts instead of later on, before the IRS came knocking on her door asking about years of unpaid taxes.

I think the IRS filed for back taxes back in 2009 or 2010 or maybe last year. I need something to refresh my memory...

Exactly! This has been going on as far back as there has been recorded music, shouldn't these people be catching on by now?

this probably explains why she switched management/professional teams to Roc Nation right when the Loud era began and it was seen as a big power move on Jay-Z's part.

This is good punishment for trying to imitate Sheila E on that tour.

It makes sense. I did post an article here last year about Rihanna's house being sold by short sale and many of you didn't think it was true. Now we know why-it's not that she isn't making lots of money, it's that the people handling her money have screwed her over (and she possibly was living a bit too large). She needs to have a firmer hand on her finances...
