Holly Robinson Peete blasts 50 Cent after he makes "special ed" joke on Twitter

via Black Thespian

Rapper 50 Cent had some s’plainin to do after he made a couple of jokes aboutautism and special ed kids on Twitter the other day.

‘yeah just saw your picture fool you look autistic RT @yung_raditz @50cent Release the album or get shot again.’

‘i dont want no special ed kids on my time line follow some body else.’

Well, those tweets were just the ammo actress Holly Robinson Peete needed to write a personal letter to 50, letting him know how she felt about the situation.

50 did eventually delete the tweets but the damage had already been done.

As a mother of an autistic son, Holly posted the below letter to the rapper on her website, Hollyrod.org:

Dear 50 Cent,

Since last night my twitter timeline is flooded with tweets and retweets about a response you posted to someone who insulted you. When I read it my heartsank. I thought maybe your account had been hacked. No such luck. Granted, his comment was completely out of line but your retort: “i just saw your picture fool you look autistic”- was so so disappointing. I mean, that’s your comeback?? And you didn’t stop there. You went on to joke about not wanting “special ed kids” on your timeline. Seriously, THIS is how you use your platform of 8 million plus followers??

I’ve met you in passing over the years and I know you are a bright, astute businessman and legitimate philanthropist so it is with a bit of sincere confusion that I ask you… Do you even know what autism is? And what exactly does “autistic” look like? Do you know how wildly prevalent autism is? 1 in 88 have it. That’s 1 in 54 boys. Families suffer a social stigma you will never know. It is a financial and emotional drain for millions, so our non-profit- HollyRod Foundation works hard to raise funds to help these families cope…

I hope you can see how what you might see as a benign insult-or not- was so randomly hurtful, immature and misinformed. Maybe you are naive or indifferent as to how many of your fans might be deeply and personally offended by your insult. At the very least-can you please delete it? If you’ve read your mentions today I am sure you have felt the wrath of autism parents. We are no joke. Neither is autism. We are not about to let you attempt to make “autistic” the new “R-word” under our watch.

Finally, this is my son Rodney Peete. He has autism. So I guess this is what autistic looks like? He is in special ed. He loves rap music and is a HUGE fan of yours. He’s a tremendous kid. He has to deal with so much trying to fit in. This isn’t helping.

Sincerely,

Holly Robinson Peete

Like lastdecember said it hardly matters what they say, just that it gets picked up by the media in an endless news cycle. So it gets reported that something was tweeted then taken down, only screen shots were captured so the damage has already been done. Holly Robinson responding to this made 50's day I'm sure, not that he meant to offend, because that would involve thinking in the first place. All attention for attentions sake, and a false sense of celebrity worthiness because people are talking about you.

And so u talk about the latest news headlines all the time do u? This isn't exactly trivial; 50 Cent has just basically damned a whole section of society, the most vulnerable infact. And it wasn't just a sniggering, aren't I clever 'oops, I've just mention 'retard' by mistake' situation. He just doesn't want to know about people with special needs; I guess like alot of stupid people he would rather they'd be round up left on some island to fend for themselves. Oh well, I guess we always knew he was a major asshole.

50 is in a different place now, still a bit stupid, but his revenue and sponsors are bigger, it doesn't take much to have people pull back on him

He cared enough to remove it at her request.

not the same.

you can have opinions and comments, not the same as making fun of people with disabilities, just uncalled for. And being a celeb and someone with sponsors who help put money in your pocket it can hurt him. no different from sportsmen who use slurs toward fans and then have to deal with the reprocutions, and they do deal with em

Hell politicians can't just tweet stuff with it coming back on them either

Employees can't put on their face book public things against employers without it hitting em either

Different world we live in

Holly was right to respond to him nod Not only is he offending a group her son is a part of, but also as she said, her son is a big 50 cent fan. In the last couple years 50 cent has tried to have more of a "friendly" and "open" image to appeal to a broader fanbase but as we can see, he is still ignorant in some regards.

when did that happen? I must have missed that one. Maybe she was more upset in this case because it was about her son...

She said her son is a big fan of 50 Cent's. Really? Has she ever listened to the lyrics of ANY of his songs? It seems she would be better served monitoring what her son is actually listening to rather than the comments taken out of context that he would never have come across. I understand her stance is symbolic, and a good opportunity to push her cause, but it comes across as a bit empty and grandstanding.

How is her stance symbolic?

She is in the front lines on autism

And I don't see that as pushing her cause at all

And definately nOt empty or grandstanding

50cent was a bitch with his ignorant comment

I'm glad she said something instead of being like most

people and looking the other way. Most people need a verbal open handed slap in the mouth to make them think. Many need a physical slap in the mouth.
