I could be biased when it comes to Mica, I think she is one of the best female vocalists ever!!

"So Good"
"Contribution"
"Whisper A Prayer"
"Black Angel"

Are her essential works, her real gems are the b sides from the contribution & whisper a prayer era.

The first CD has a smooth jazz flavor. I'd recommend the UK version (on the left) over the US version. US labels love to muck around with foreign albums. I don't know why they can't just leave well enough alone.

The second CD has a hip-hoppy/new-jack/club/soul flavor. Guest spots from rapper Rakim, guitarist Nile Rodgers, and a tune penned by the little purple man [the album version is WAY better than the single remix].

The third CD [Island's crossover attempt] has an L.A. soul/pop flavor. Rod Temperton and Narada Michael Walden outdid themselves in the production department.

The fourth CD (which sat on a shelf for 4 or 5 years before being released because no one knew what to do with her) has a classic R&B/neo-soulesque flavor. The title cut was written/produced by a George O'Dowd (better known as Boy George). The Japanese pressing [which is the one I own] doesn't contain my jam "I Shoud've Known Better" but it makes up for the omission with some great bonus tracks including an unrecognizable cover of U2's "One" up against a sample from Barry White's "Playing Your Game, Baby".

The fifth CD... I'm not sure what the story is with this CD. It's not a bad collection of songs. I just don't listen to it much and haven't in many years. I believe these were vaulted tracks or possibly even demos recorded for a producer whose name I don't recall.

The sixth CD is a collection of [IMHO] uninspired soul covers.

The seventh CD has a very contemporary pop+dance+bit-o-country flavor.

Though Mica is a soul singer, her style is constantly changing. I don't know if that's of her doing or if she's just been at the mercy of her record companies and whatever producers she's paired with. That may be a big reason why she's not found an audience. Most people want predictable. That, Mica is not.
