July 2, 1976: the day Tina Turner set herself free from "Pistol Whippin' Ike"
I felt this day was quite a memorable one.
I imagined the fight Ike & Tina actually had was more wilder - and violent - than the comic book caricature version shown in "What's Love Got to Do With It".
But Tina's story in how she told it is amazing to say the least and so was her comeback from all of that and to live and strive nearly 40 years later. I just felt I had to bring it up.
July 2 was the 36th anniversary of Tina Turner's fleeing from Ike Turner. A historic day for music, I shall say.

POWER TO TINA I meant to say [Edited 7/4/12 22:50pm] Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I wonder if Ike ever had any remorse for the shit he did

Took him about 30 years to apologize (in public) and this was after St. Louis failed to honor a day after him due to what he had done to her. I think he died a year later. Post-Tina for years he kept excusing it as "well I thought she was happy" or something to that effect.

Sign of a truly messed up individual to take that long to say Im sorry-sad Last interview I saw before he died he looked terrible-his conscious probably ate him up.

Damn. She snapped, and with reason too.

Ike himself never sought help for his mental issues - the guy was raped at six and molested two more times before 12, saw his father get beat up and die later, saw his mother go through a mess of a second marriage. I think Ike was bipolar (though his kids denied it) and this, including the way he handled his business, made it difficult for him to be dealt with. Tina herself came from a fucked up background (can you imagine your parents just straight up leaving you and your sister because they got tired of each other and didn't wanna raise you?) but tried to console Ike even while he was going upside her head. Two people from fucked up backgrounds, it was already volatile before Tina was forced to "marry" and both Ike & Tina contend their marriage was probably not valid anyway.

Yeah, even kneed him in the groin area...

I shudder when I think of the abuse she had to go to. The rape scene in that movie got me.

They exaggerated that part but it was an imagination of Tina's own words in her own autobiography - Tina did say that after Ike would hit her, they would have sex and "it felt like he was raping me".

I can't. | |

There was stuff they didn't even put on it - like cigarette stubs on her lips, a shoe stretcher upside her cheek, coffee burns on her neck, coat hangers around her trying to choke her out, putting her onstage when she was nine months pregnant, three days after the baby was born, when she caught jaundice, when she had tuberculosis, when they had their fights backstage and blood oozed out (this was at black clubs I presume), the guy even made her eat pound cake one day despite Tina saying she didn't order it (they exaggerated that too in the movie in which the infamous "eat the cake Anna Mae" bit came from). And not to mention words of cheating that apparently she learned about. And yet Tina survived all of it.

I like Ike Turner less and less when I hear about him. Hard to separate the music from the man.

weird how I've been playing the Private Dancer album all day and I never knew her divorce date was so close.

how do you mean there marriage wasn't valid? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Because they apparently married in Tijuana and the marriage there wasn't valid so according to some, they enter into a common law union because of California's confusing laws (common-law is actually not allowed there but they were allowed to have one there).

well if the marriage wasn't valid-why the divorce? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Seeing that picture makes me so happy that Tina got out of it when she did. I'm glad she left before Ike got into crack!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Because they allowed it as a common-law marriage.

I love Tina, she is such a strong woman to have put up with that mess!!! Glad she was set free to enjoy the rest of her life and her career!!

Timmy, I still don't get it "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

He told Geraldo that he slapped her and hit her but never beat her. Andy is a four letter word.

Dude had short term memory loss. He actually thought folks would buy that.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
How he could look at himself in the mirror is beyond me "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Hell, if slapping and hitting isn't beating then I don't know what is. He just made a dumbass remark that sounded stupid. Kinda like after Michael Jackson died and Joseph said..."He was the biggest in all the United States of the world". Andy is a four letter word.

Andy!!!! How was Ike molested twice before the age of 12-was it the same sitch as when he was raped? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Jesus, someone needed to check both Ike's brain and (when he dies) Joe's brain for analysis... seriously. I mean they checked Marvin Sr.'s brain, why not them?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It was pretty much child rape though Ike said it was consensual (which is even more fucked up).
