D'Angelo is my boy but its too soon to be doing shows @ $100 a pop...I'm in the Dirty-South and a little birdie told me ya'll dwelling in the City of Angels gots the Cash to pay for high priced traveling-off-broadway shows and Concerts...

So is $100 bones expensive or is that bubble-gum change?

[Edited 7/5/12 12:44pm]

lol lol lol lol

100 is really not THAT expensive. However, its pricey for an artist who has been way for over a decade and just recently got back to touring about 8-9 months ago. With that being said, the money is well worth it because D can put on a show but I think for certain areas he shouldnt price it as high. This was House of Blues so maybe thats why his peoples priced it high. Its still not really an excuse...

I agree...It's amazing how the Promoter took D's well received reception @ the BET awards as the Green Light to get a $100 dollars a ticket...

If he plan on coming to Columbia, South Carolina, HOME of his baby-Momma Angie Stone he better Walk up to the Microphone Bucket-Naked and Perfrom Bucket-naked all night if he expect the Sistas to pay $100 dollars a piece.....

I will say this....I know some Big-Bone Sistas that wil save their hair-do money, get a Pay-Day-Loan and wear an Old Ass wig to see D'Angelo...

The ticket prices were annouced before D performed on BET to be fair.

If D angelo performed close to me I wouldnt mine paying a 100 bucks to see him but thats just me, if it was priced any higher I probably wouldnt razz

We will have to see if they continue with these prices...

anybody catch D on the BET Awards? He rocked. eek It was awesome hearing Sugah Daddy outsideof the crappy audience recordings + what Untitled sounds like with the Testimony, instead of just him doing it solo on electric piano. Hoping he plays Untitled with full band tonight. Also hoping he changes up the setlist a bit. How about playing I Found My Smile Again? She's Always In My Hair? Left and Right? Greatdayndamorning / Booty? Send It On? Black Hole Sun? More New Songs? Just thoughts.

I beg to DIFFER, his performance was awful. After the How Does it Feel "intro", the undecipherable rant he and the band went on wa unbearable and went on way too long. didn't generate any buzz for him IMO, just vamps, ad-libs, and runs, I was emabarrased for him! The band is tight tho

To be fair, you could also say that about Prince during the Parade Tour. He clearly had James' TAMI performance running through a loop.

Matter of fact, Rick Rubin said he actually did when he went to Paisley Park.

He definitely is channeling Prince who was channeling JB. Prince and James were more complete performers at that stage. All the dizzying dance moves and splits were on another level. On top of that, they both were and are very charismatic personalities. D has got the music part down. Not gonna take anything away from him cause I got mad love for his music. Especially some of the new songs he played in Europe. He is a a rare breed in music today. That's why there's so much pressure on him to put something out and blow us all away. Later for all the haters... What have you done?

D Angelo isnt a dancer neither is Prince but D has good stage presence and knows how to work a mic. Yes, he is a musian but he most certainly isnt boring to watch. I find him more entertaining than most performers out now which arent many. I think what I like most about him is his ability to convey emotion which alot of artists of today dont do, he seems to have fun when he performs and his effortless charisma which doesnt seem forced, not manufactured.

I'm sorry, but my entire knowledge of D'Angelo is that I think Prince said his name once in a song.

Never heard a thing he's ever done, and have no idea why there are D'Angelo threads two or three times a week. Never, ever heard him mentioned on the news, in the paper, or anywhere else except here.

What is his connection with Prince? Are they friends? Have they done something together that I missed?

Shame. D'Angelo single handedly gave us Neo-Soul along with his then manager Kedar Massenburg, dudes a musical prodigy won Apollo before he was in his 20's ghost wrote You will know for a gang of 90's r/b stars in the 90's and basically brought black musicianship back to a forefront for a whole generation of cats raised on drum machines and samples. His relation to PRINCE is that as any good student he pays homage to the masters Marvin, Stevie, Curtis, Green, Prince,Sly etc... He drew comparasons to Marvin and Prince because of his falsetto, layering style and the fact that he made it apparant that he was a Prince fan. Prince has. Welcomed D'Angelo initally met him introduced to them Chaka Khan with his then girlfriend Angie Stone, had D' perform with him on piano when he did the The Work on Leno, then in a change of mind (or under the influence of his advisors) started distancing himself from D'Angelo after D's major hit Untitled, (not to mention the AWESOME remake D'Angelo did of She's Always in My Hair) claiming to be offended about some bs in D's linear notes to his follow up Voodoo, which he didnt even write, and started doin sneak disses at D' in the WACK Daisy Chain video. Where they are now? Who knows.

I've followed D since 95.

I'm just wondering how you've come with this notion that he has a bunch of money?

I see no evidence of that...

I'm sure he's getting annual royalty cheques from songwriting, but I don't think he's loaded by any stretch.

Any artist of his calibre and fame should be able to "get by", just by not being a greedy idiot lol

[Edited 7/4/12 23:10pm]

I didn't say he had a bunch of money. I just said he apparently has enough money to live without having to put out albums. So I was curious as to what his income sources were.

Not for any reason pertaining to him directly, I'm just curious as to how the music business works over the long haul.

The insiders in the industy sustain D'Angelo, believe it or not. You guys are acting like hes Dwele or somebody, dudes always had Top Notch Deals the first through Virgin/EMI where he was a big PRIORITY and was given a boutique label and they even marketed Nikka Costas Everybody has their Something through his imprint, go on with the bullshit, Rolling Stone called dude R/B Jesus and that was a decade ago when he was chubby playing a rhodes, smokin cigarettes and singin falseto, I think now hes signed to RCA who have funded for him to record in Electric Lady for the past 2-3 years, dude is O.K. He just needs to drop and album, he's like the Dr. Dre of soul/r/b or whatever there calling it these days...

All the time, lol. Im a Prince fan. What you think Im here for, as far as my comments, I stand on that. Now you know that my statement about the last 30 years was about Larry Graham, not Prince, I bought 3 of the last 5 Prince releases (liked them and understood hes always growing) and didnt sit and over analyze them the way I see others did, but hey its whatever. I just felt it was discouraging to see how D'Angelos been thrashed on here due to some "beef" with P' and all hes ever done was praise Prince, sad, then to see the Daisy Chain video, and believe me I never seen it til today. Was a big WOW for me. Lol.

They compare him to Marvin because you can hear that in his music and thats the primary influence that he mentions. I highly doubt D angelo was studying Prince 85 concert, not to mention even had the time to... The man is just gifted. His performance style is really not like Prince.. I dont see why some of yall feel that way. Is it because he can play alot of instruments? I hate when yall compare artists out now to Prince... D angelo is great artist standing alone.. just let it be like that.

C'mon, you know damn well why D gets compared to Prince. Besided him having Jesse Johnson in his band, and Eric Leeds playing saxophone for him a couple of weeks ago at Bonnaroo.

Listen to this version of Brown Sugar and tell me this isn't Lady Cab Driver.

It's not just because he uses falsetto and can play an instrument.
