Tony Toni Tone's Sons of Soul One of my top 10 albums of the 1990's and it still sounds fresh today. In my opinion this 1993 release was the groups masterwork a peak that set the standards extremely high shadowing each of their subsequent releases. It's hard to believe that this album was produced in the R&B/Soul genre in the early '90s due mainly to its use of live instrumentation and also because the music contained on the album covered so many various genres. The songs are soulful, funky, danceable, romantic, jazzy, all with a tinge of hip hop that makes the set cohesive. All of us long time Prince appreciators can recognize the work of long time Prince collaborator Clare Fischer on the inspired track Anniversary. My favorite songs from the set are What Goes Around Comes Around, Tell Me Mama, Leavin, Slow Wine and Gangsta Groove. However the standouts are the aforementioned Anniversary, (Lay Your Head on My) Pillow and the truncated Castleers, which is so good its a shame they cut the song at the 1.19 mark. Tony Toni Tone should be forced to re-releaseCastleers as a full length song, the shortness of this sublime track is a crime against all music lovers.
This album laid a blueprint for the "Neo Soul" movement that soon followed with the likes of Maxwell, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu in the mid 1990s. However none of the latter musicians albums with the exception of Badu's 2000 release Mama's Gun, show the range and diverse appeal as this album.

How timely for me - I just ordered this cd about a week ago. After Raphael Saadiq got the grammy attention I decided to fill in the Toni Toni Tone gaps in my collection. Can't wait for the mail now.

That shit WAS OFF THE HOOK!!
My mom couldnt stop playing that tape out when she got it! It still sounds like new 2day!!! All the beats still cut nice! "Tell Me Mama" has a nice Al Green break down! "I Couldnt Keep It 2 Myself" gotta nice hip hop Jazz flow 2 it, very nice vocals! "Leaving" DAMN THAT CUT IS TIGHT!!! "Lay Ur Head On My Pillow" timeless classics... "If I Had No Loot" got sum bangin drums and nice lyrics. "What Goes Around Comes Around" works perfectly with the jamacian guy rappin at the end! "Anniversary - Castleers" DAMN One of the best segues i ever heard! Anniversary is Toni Tone Tony's "Adore" basically. U can hear the ghostly chants of Raphel's vocals hidden in the vibe of Clare's Ochestra! Oh my god! Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.
