What bugged me, I didn't like how the DeBarge discography was presented; it annoyed the heck out of me. I guess I need to get over it. It looked rushed, half backed... snatch and grab the money without attempting to add a little class to it. In this instance I would have liked to have seen an option package of vinly records as well.
20th Century Records did the same thing to Stephanie Mills, if I didn't know any better I'd assumed the same people designed both that box sets as well.
Oh well. | |

What's on the shefl over at Arista?
I'd like the option of buying Jermaine's album in vinly too. Do something retro..." My Name Is Jermaine" album came with a poster and I think the Frontiers' did as well. I want the presentation befitting a box-set, they guy deserves that much.

I read once that Tito recorded an unreleased instrumental album at Motown. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Motown also shelved an album by Marlon as well. Check me out and add me on:

Tito recorded an album for the MoWest label of Motown in 1972.
Marlon recorded an album around 1974. Both were shelved.
Jackie recorded his album in 1972 but was shelved for over a year and finaly released in late October of 73.
Mike recorded an album in late 73 and was shelved. Most were released on "Farwell" about ten years later.
Jermaine's Do Unto Others was shelved because the brother were just leaving Motown. It would have came out a few months after Moving Violation.
We all know of the Stevie Wonder produced record probably to be released sometime in 1974. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Damn! I never knew Jermaine was so hot back in the day. He never should have tried making that 1980s ambisexual thing work.

It's the one I have and probably the best on the market for covering that timeline in one disc, and compiles BOTH labels hits the artist was on. How often does that happen?? Even Janet didn't get a nice overview until 2009's Number Ones.

The first three are official imports, the rest are fakes. Check me out and add me on:

The fakes are the ones I think need the most attention! You know, even if they could compile them all like MJ's Hello World box set... it would just be nice to have official ones on CD, from the master tape.
Cherry Red and Big Break Records have been doing a great job of reissuing soul on CD. Even Latoya got a couple albums reissued! Maybe they will do this for Jermaine.

I agree. All of Jermz stuff on Motown needs to get some re-evaluation and deluxe treatment. I much rather prefer Motown/Hip-O do it, but knowing where the money lies with Motown....I wouldn't be surprised if some UK reissue company like Cherry Red and BBR gets his stuff deluxe treatment. Hip-O would be ideal

My biggest beef with Cherry Red and BBR always comes in with the mastering department. They claim they use master tapes, but they compress the shit out all of their stuff. Not good at all. Check me out and add me on:

That's part of the process, and I don't think they do too bad. I opened up the wav files on Kashif and Krystol.. they weren't badly shoeboxed or anything, very dynamic.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I said Hip-O would be ideal because of their relationship with Motown and how they might be more likely to put together a box set like Hello World (MJ).

I guess the unofficial reissue company printed that on the artwork to make it more interesting and they most likely don't have the original tapes. Recently a few reissue companies such as Boogie-Times, Funkytown Grooves, Hip-O Select, Vinyl-Masterpiece, Wounded Bird and various Japanese divisions of major labels have been occasionally able to remaster from the originals. I once received a greatly tweaked unofficial album release of another artist though, around the time when cd recordables were just coming in the market. Pro Tools and similar digital programs offer quite a good alternative in case the unofficial reissue company has a good sound engineer in the house.

1. Jermaine (1973) 2. Come Into My Life (1973) 3. My Name Is Jermaine (1976) 4. Feel The Fire (1977) 5. Frontiers (1978) 6 Lets Get Serious (1979) 7. Jermaine (1980) 8. I Like You Style (1981) 9. Let Me Tickle Your Fancy (1982)
I agree with LBC, long overdue. I'd like to see a nice boxset of JM albums, not the crap that Motown did when they released the DeBarge discography last year. For all the crackin' I've done on the guy, I've liked a lot of what he's recorded. [/quote] I'm with you, TD3. This needs to happen right freaking now.

Them O'Bryan ones were the worse. Sound was somewhat muffled and shit lol !!! The funny thing is, he still selling these cds on ebay(he's been doing it for three or four years now ?). Maybe even longer I remember buying Jermaine's "Let Me Tickle You Fancy" and O'Bryan's "You And I" around 2003-2004. I knew then that they were unofficial but they were also rather cheap to afford, as i had not yet all the digital equipment to copy on a cd recordable.
