"You's a bad man, bury me under the willow" is disturbing but oddly sexy. He took her seriously and buried her alive.
She releases music on her own label Goe Music. "Bad Man" comes out July 16.

Interview W/ Ruby Goe
One of our predictions for a star of the future is alternative-pop artist and jewellery designer Ruby Goe. In the lead up to the release of her new single 'Badman' - a flawless combination of euphoric electronic rhythms and instantly infectious vocals - we met Ruby at the glamorous Beach Blanket Babylon in Notting Hill, for a fabulous photo shoot and revealing interview.
HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR MUSICAL SOUND? Courageous, honest and heart-felt.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT? My new tune is called 'Badman'. I wrote it with Andy Shatterley who is an amazing producer, songwriter and pianist, and it's about being in a shit relationship and him cheating on you, kind of breaking you down mentally. It's kind of described in a physical sense. Thomas Knights, who directed 'Get on it', directed the video. He's a genius, gorgeous man.
WHOSE IDEA WAS IT FOR YOU TO BE COVERED IN BLACK GLITTERY OIL IN YOUR LAST VIDEO? I think it was Thomas' idea. It was treacle so it felt sticky and itchy.
HOW DID YOU GET IT OFF? My boyfriend washed it off! He gets all the perks! It was tins and tins of treacle that Thomas bought and he just smothered me. It was about 3 hours lying underneath Thomas whilst he shouted "Writhe! Writhe! " at me. It was hilarious but the outcome was just phenomenal.
HOW DID YOU HOOK UP WITH PUMA? They came to see me play at a gig and they were listening to some of my music and they were like, "we really believe in what you're doing, you're obviously up and coming" and they offer a lot of support. I worked with them in designing limited edition knuckle-dusters, because I have a jewellery-line anyway.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON WITH THEM AT THE MOMENT? Well we're discussing the ideas for the new music video and obviously it's the Olympic year too, so there will be lots of live things as well.
WHAT CAN OUR READERS EXPECT FROM YOUR DEBUT ALBUM? They can expect some big ballads, big beats and big vocals.
I WASN'T EXPECTING THERE TO BE BALLADS? Oh yeah, it's like half and half. I’ve grown up in a background where it's like jazz and soul music, I'm changing as a person. I think when you're an artist you're creative in different ways and that can be different styles of music, a jewellery line or whatever - I think if you're creative you just need to get it out of your system. To box yourself into being only an upbeat dance artist is crazy, even though I do love creating dance music.
I HEAR YOU RECORD UP TO 10 SONGS A WEEK? Yeah! That’s normal. Even if it’s shit, you have to keep on getting it out. It’s not inside your head anymore, it’s out and you can move on. That’s my philosophy. Keep on writing and keep on creating. I have that constant stream of energy for things going in and then out of me. It’s cathartic and important to always have something to say.
DOES YOUR BOYFRIEND GET A BIT CONCERNED THAT HE BETTER BEHAVE HIMSELF IN CASE YOU WRITE A SONG ABOUT HIM AND CALL HIM THE BAD MAN? Haha, well yes that’s the thing, he knows he better behave himself, otherwise I’m going to write a song and tell everyone! His favourite songs are the ones that are written about him, obviously. He’s always listening intently to my lyrics. But the thing is – I’ve told him and everyone – if I have a conversation with you and you tell me your deepest, darkest secrets I will turn them into a song. It’s not like I just take inspiration from what I’m doing - I’ll talk to my mates and see what’s happening with them, with their boyfriends. Like a song called'Hurt' I wrote for my best friend who was seeing a married man, and I wrote it from his perspective. It’s doing things like that, that allows me to write 10 songs a week.
YOU’RE PUTTING OUT MUSIC ON YOUR OWN LABEL, GOE MUSIC. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO THIS? WAS IT AN EASY DECISION TO GO WITH THE DIY APPROACH? The music industry is pretty f**ked. If you have a really strong head and you know what you’re doing and you know what sound you want, what style you want, you know how to dress yourself (a lot of people in the music industry really don’t, they can’t write, they don’t know what style of music they’re doing) - if you go into a label their instant reaction to you is that you must be stupid. So you’ll go into one and they’ll be like, “Oh my god you’re amazing, look at all these singles you’ve got!” They’ll send you off to work with all these different people that they think you should work with, they’ll try and mould you, and that doesn’t work for someone like me.
I want to retain my creative control until it cannot be touched. So I want to go into a label and for them to say, “We see what you do, we love what you do, we’ll take you on” rather than, “We kind of like what you do, but we’re going to change you and then change our mind”and then it’s all going to go tits up, because you were never true to yourself in the first place.
HOW DID YOU REACH THESE CONCLUSIONS? I signed to a major label and got dropped. As a modern artist you have to do so much by yourself. My parents don’t have money, I’ve always worked. Since I was 13 I've had a job. It’s always been a case of I can get it done as long as I have the right funds and the work ethic. You have to get up every morning and think about how you’re going to be earning more. You’ve got to keep having the drive to push yourself. And I wish that a lot of artists knew that getting a deal isn’t the be all and end all. I have acquaintances who are singers and songwriters and they’re like “I just have to get a deal”.
THE WORK STARTS ONCE YOU GET THE DEAL. Yeah, I’ve had a deal. It’s not all that! Things really started happening when I was doing it all myself. If it’s the wrong deal it can really fuck you up.
YOU’RE ONLY 24, YOU HAVE YOUR OWN RECORD LABEL, JEWELLERY LINE, YOU’RE COLLABORATING WITH PUMA… DID YOU MAKE AN ACTIVE DECISION IN YOUR MIND TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS? Totally, I think it was instilled in me from my dad. My mother died when I was 3 months old. And it’s like, life is fucking short. You never know when something terrible is going to happen so you have to go for it. You can make your mistakes, you can learn from it and move on. Everything I do is to take opportunities and to go for it.
LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR JEWELLERY LINE BY ROGUE, WHICH IS AMAZING. HOW DID THE LINE COME ABOUT? I only started making jewellery because I wanted some good knuckle-dusters. I didn’t want to do it in seasons because I’m not really fash. People were thinking they were really cool and asking where I got them from. So I started making some for my friends. Then I made a Tumblr site and put the images up. It was really simple. I made the samples, took some pictures of them, and people started taking interest from there and the press I got was amazing. Jessie J wears them all the time. They went into Selfridges and then we got onto MyFlashTrash and a couple of other places. It’s going really well.
WHO WOULD MOST LIKE TO BE COMPARED TO MUSICALLY? I’ve had loads of different ones. Lykke Li, Robyn, Beyonce (really didn’t need that pressure), M.I.A, Santigold and Adele.
A VERY FLATTERING LIST! I’m eternally flattered by people’s comparisons. It’s good because I think what that means is that no one can put me next to someone, it varies so much. And then older ones like Eartha Kitt too.
WHO WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO BE COMPARED TO? I don’t know, someone with no talent (laughs). I’m not straight up pop. I like people who are individual and interesting and challenging, not someone who’s had all their songs written for them - I think that kind of thing is dying out anyway.
WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? I love Miike Snow. They are brilliant musicians, and they are geniuses.
SO WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PLANS? Lots of live shows.
DO YOU DANCE WHEN YOU PERFORM? I’m not really a dancer. I vibe - I two-step!
WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO PERFORM LIVE? Wembley Arena. Somewhere big. Glastonbury main stage.
AND FINALLY, WHO ARE YOU IDOLS? Wow.... Nina Simone and Oprah - and my Dad.
