Why y'all so concerned with "genius?"
"Genius" is hardly quantifiable; and if reports and findings are true, then it looks like Mozart wasn't a genius; as it turns out, he was just a supremely talented and hard working mutherfucker.
Now if Mozart's genius is now being called into question, then there's no fucking way that Marvin Gaye, for all his talent and for crafting what I think is the greatest pop album of all time, What's Goin' On, was a genius. Not buying it. If Mozart ain't a genius, nobody is.
Hell, Mozart embodied music...dude was the truth.

Does the notion of genius have any actual meaning at all?

It was a sarcastic pun toward that fiasco in that R. Kelly thread and there are alot of artists that I enjoy that I dont consider to be geniuses so its not really a concern to me personally.
Second in every genius debate you use Mozart as your standard example of genius. I guess thats fine but how does that make Marvin Gaye any less of a genius? Genius means different things to different people. If Mozart is the ONLY genius you think ever existed... than so be it. I love Marvin Gaye and he is a genius, and this was a genius album Whats some of your favorite tracks on it?

The song was inspired by Frankie's comments about the war. This and "What's Going On" really set the tone for the album.

Because he's the quintessential and most easily recognizable musical genius, that's why! Mozart isn't the only genius I think that ever existed (Monk would get a nod from me) but c'mon guys....everyone who is musically talented is not a genius. The word has lost its meaning; that's my biggest gripe with it being used so casually here.
Now if we're talking about pissing on under aged girls, then yes, Kells is a genius.

I love how all the songs flow together right after the other and I could not literally sleep last night because I was raping the repeat button on Flying High... just incredible!!!!
I exactly read up on this and found it very interesting... the entire song is allegedly about his brother in third person. Whats happening brother

Well... I like R. Kelly... so Ill just leave it at that. I dont consider him to be a genius though in the same way I do Marvin Gaye. I do agree the term is used to loosely but I guess people have their own definition of the word but even still it shouldnt be used so casually and you still didnt answer my question You should post some Mozart songs, Im interested in hearing his genius

I would never poke fun at somebody for liking an artist. You'll never have to defend your taste with me! (I do believe that was him in that video tossin' that girl's salad and pissing on her).
If I started a Mozart thread, it'll be tumbleweeds blowing through that mutherfucker and I would be personally offended, so I'll pass.
My favorite track on What's Goin' On? I think the entire album is akin to a musical suite: where the pieces bleed in to each other so seamlessly and effortlessly that you cannot separate songs in to individual pieces. But Mercy Mercy Me has to be one of the prettiest melodies in Americana. God, I love that album. I listened to it once when I was on shrooms and I swear to God that the sun turned into a bronzy gold star and lifted me over the firmament....good times.

"If you ask me if I'm a genius or a fraud, sadly, I think I'm a fraud." -- Marvin Gaye (1972 - okay I'm not sure what year but I think he said this to Rolling Stone)
Marvin in fact credited the Funk Brothers, David Van DePitte (who was the album's conductor and arranger) and, of course, God for the entire album. I think he called David a genius for helping that album to gel the way it did. He often would say that album was done on "a devine purpose" and that he was simply the voice to "carry the vessel".
I think now he wouldn't think he was a genius though he did have a good ego: "The only thing between me and Beethoven is time" (what he told Crawdaddy magazine in 1973).

I hope you enjoyed that irrelivant rant...
The word genius does not have to be taken literally, it's just a word used to describe something which is special.
