As much as you championed Throb, you give If and Funky Big Band no love. no no no! What's up with that?!? wink

I love the live renditions of Throb and I have some hot remixes, also SNL Throb performance thrills me still but IF kills Throb as an album cut

Oh hell yeah, If is a stronger track (IMO of course). nod But I still like to play If & Throb back to back. cool

"Throb" was a decent house track but mainstream R&B artists, including Prince, usually just make fairly average generic sounding house tracks because it's not their specialty. It was tolerable but it wasn't no Black Box or 49ers by no means. lol I used to play "If" a little bit if I was just feeling a little desperate and running out of things to play also. I didn't consider it a hard strong song though. I don't even remember "Funky Big Band" or any of the other tracks on the album. I just remember not liking the majority of the album. I had it on cassette (this was during the era when records were extinct and CD players were too expensive to afford). When I either replaced old cassettes with CDs years later, or recorded tracks from cassettes onto CD, I didn't even keep one track from the cassette and just went ahead and threw it away when I disposed of my old cassettes.

I shouldn't have even bought it anyway after hearing the absolutely horrible lead single "That's The Way Love Goes" with it's "smooth" midtempo vibe with the weak shit hop sounding drum machines but I took a chance and was disappointed anyway hoping the rest of the album would be strong sounding like her previous albums. Since shit hop was first starting to take over but hadn't quite completely, it was definitely the perfect period of time for someone huge like her, who everyone was looking forward to a new album from, to come back hard and strong with a successful album doing hard jams like they were known for and influencing others to get back on the right track. Instead, she decided to join the enemy and sell out and do what they were doing so I said "fuck her" from then on.

I blame Mary J. Blige AND Sean Combs for that bullshit because they (especially Sean) invented hip-hop soul. disbelief lol As soon as Mary's What's The 411? album was a success on r&b radio, Janet had her own take on hip-hop soul with the track That's The Way Love Goes. And Madonna did the same damn thing with Secret on her Bedtime Stories album.

Blasphemy. That's The Way Love Goes is a phenomenal song. I don't even understand how you can even say Janet. was a hiphop album when it's New Jack Swing and Pop and the only rap was featured on one song (new agenda). The drum programming was hot and it takes talent to make a beat. I would have understood more if you had that problem with Damita Jo or 20yo because that would make sense.

I can't believe I'm sticking up for the "Janet." album when it's not even close to my favorite.

That's so hard because both Janet and Velvept Rope are my fav Janet albums. I guess I'll say Velvet Rope because I tend to like the darker side of artists and feel their insecurities and complexities through their music. Hard one tho.

Just because it uses a James Brown song, that has been used in hip/hop records does not make it, "Her take" on the hip-hop subgenre". The sample went along nicely with the song, and if "hip/hop heads" gravitated towards it, was a bonus.

The JB sample has nothing to do with it. The track was slight higher than 95 BPM, but still mid-tempo. wink

I don't think anyone saw the problem that created back then, until every singer had to have a rapper on their song or a rap version and an non rap version, every last one of them...

Madonna didn't have a rapper, she just had that urban r&b touch via Babyface, but she had it on Erotica too

Secret is a very good song + video, I'm glad she had no rapper on that one

Yes!

I slept on Velvet Rope for over 10 years. Bought it when it first came out and it got lost in the shuffle of moving.

Saw a thread on it and people were practically openly weeping over their love for it. I went

whofarted

So I went through my stuff and found it and went:

faint

That album is fantastic. clapping I have always adored the album Janet.

I saw it back then. I used to have the radio on at work back then and a whole hour would go by before they might play a jam. I'd get mad as hell as say "Hell, play something fast!" before turning the radio completely off from being despressed from hearing it. lol

It's funny that you said that, because 2pac did the rap vocals on the original demo version of Madonna's I Rather Be Your Lover.

also that bullshit about the depression because some teacher yelled at her when she was 6 was a bit off-putting.

i didn't know rene elizondo co-wrote all the songs with janet and jimmy on the Rhythm Nation, Janet, and Velvet Rope.

from an old interview

Elizondo, 37, said he was a dancer when they met, and during their relationship and marriage they co-wrote 37 songs and worked together on several hit albums, including Rhythm Nation 1814 and Velvet Rope. He also directed the videos for her songs, That's The Way Love Goes, Again and Together Again. He also had a cameo role as a postal worker in Jackson's film debut Poetic Justice.

Asked if he could see the two of them working together again, he replied, "I have sort of left that up in the air. I guess it all depends on how everything goes."

He added, "Hopefully, everything will remain amicable. We've done a lot of great work together. I wrote 37 songs, That's The Way Love Goes, Together Again, Rhythm Nation, Black Cat, Come Back To Me and on and on."

Jackson always stood by her man and gave him credit for his work.

She once told Rolling Stone: "Rene has been my co-writer on almost all my songs since Rhythm Nation but refused to take credit. He wanted to prove that he wasn't with me to take, but to give. I appreciated that attitude, but I also saw that it was leading to feelings of fraudulence--on his part, not mine. On Velvet Rope, Rene's name appears for the first time as co-executive producer and co-writer. Just as it's wrong to claim undeserved credit, it's wrong to deny credit when it's deserved."

[Edited 6/28/12 22:57pm]

Janet wrote the lyrics to Black Cat and That's the way Love Goes herself. There were many songs Rene didn't work on. Jimmy himself said he didn't remember seeing Rene in the studio with a pen and pad.

No thanks. The Janet of the last 10 years bores me to tears. I can't imagine there's a single thought in the whole thig worth reading. Thoughts aren't really Janet's thing any more.

But my point was that the "depression" theme was a major angle for promoting that album at the time (in addition to nipple piercings and coffee enemas) and she didn't have a better illustration for it on the Oprah show, of all places, than some teacher yelled at her when she was a little kid.

Right. It wasn't just about the teacher thing. Her weight, body and self-esteem issues, her marriage to DeBarge, feeling lost in the shuffle of a big, famous family, being one of the only Black kids in a predominantly white school/neighborhood...
