Not really. I don't think anything he did was mind blowing or revolutionary. I don't see his thinking as being on a different plane than the rest of the world.

He just wrote some of the best songs ever!
That's the way I took it. He wasn't a genius but he had mad talent doing what he did. The real geniuses of the records he did, to me, were Marv Tarplin and Paul Riser.

I agree though.. Smokey is incredibly talented but I dont think I would call him a musical genius. He definitly was a genius in songwriting and in composition. He is criminally underrated in that department.
Am I the only one who thinks he has weak, reedy voice?
Probably not, but I suspect you're opinion is in the minority. For my money, Smokey's a good, but not truly great falsetto. I much prefer his earliest works in the Doo Wop era. I think his voice is at its greatest strength then, both high and low registers.
Again, can anyone tell me if Dylan actually say this? That quote sounds like urban folklore. I'm not dissing Dylan or Smokey because his shit was indeed poetic but I just want confirmation about that quote.

He mentions Smoke as one of his favorite poets
Ah so he just said Smoke was one of his favorite poets... see I wanted to see what he actually said. But this is close, thanks.
Yeah I think that quote was urban folklore. Also wonder about John Lennon's comments about Elvis and Chuck Berry... I think they were misquoted too in a sense.
