LOL, I see Quincy's point about P Diddy's doctorate in marketing, but I didn't like his comment about the "b flat" thing. Lots of famous writers can't read music. Lional Richie, Lennon and McCartney, the Bee Gee's, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, even Cole Porter supposedly.

Anyway, I like David Fosters view (who can read music), when he said you don't need to to be able to make a hit record.

After reading that over again, he's not knocking hip hop or it's music...
He's stating what we all know.. Diddy is a master of marketing and promotion...Hell Diddy would tell you that himself!..lol

The responses threw me off, some you guys just can't wait to knock hip hop (first response was so bitter and sad to read..boo Hoo )....smh

Quincy has had too much involvement in hip hop...

His corny ass son does hip hop

His production company had a show featuring a hip hop artist (Fresh Prince of Belair)....
"Real music....blah blah"...smdh
Y'all starting to sound as bad as those "We want our America Back" nutjobs

However, he had no problem with hip-hop artists when he was making money off of them. In fact it could be said, that Quincy, more so than any other REAL musician, helped usher rap into the mainstream of the music industry.

1. Define "real musician".

People that have mastered a physical musical instrument. Especially those people whose mastery is such that they have influenced other musicians through their playing. Today's mainstream music scene is such that audiences have had almost NO EXPOSURE to anyone that talented. It's just as bad for singers, who are let down by sub-par writing talent and weak azz 'producers', posing as musicians. Actual music , played by actual musicians, is no longer really sold at the mainstream level. Audiences wouldn't recognize it if they heard it. I think most people with at least a 1st grade education knew diddy was not trying to be a musical genius razz

There's no reason Q needed to steer clear of Rap/Hip-Hop.
It was a popular form that he incorporated (not became a part of) into the music he was producing.
Just as he incorporated popular Funk and R&B elements/artists over the years as he moved from doing strictly Jazz.

I'll close my chapter in this thread by saying I probably wouldn't have commented at all if it hadn't have been for the negative comments directed at Q.
And these were taken from partial quotes that no one really knew what the context was.
Hell, overall he could've been complimenting P-? on his lack of musical knowledge but success via marketing.

But what's the easiest thing to do? Research the topic?
Nope. Attack Q.

So, as an excercise i'll defend him.

Not based on the article, but based on his musical history.

Huh?!!..... You do know that the turntable and drum machine has been acknowledged as "real" instruments for over two decades? (right next to the synthesizer) So I have a feeling "actual" music has been made AND sold on the mainstream level....

Now while I might agree that some songs have weak production or crappy lyrics...but so did songs in every era...

Back to the topic "The Audience" was spot on....

I was at the Jam of the Year tour in 1997 and during the piano melody (band left the stage) Prince said "I have Quincy Jones on tape saying I'm not a good piano player." Then he just played his heart out for about a minute and stopped and said "that's why folks should keep my mouth shut."

I thought it was interesting.....because I thought Q and P was always cool because I have seen Q speak about him during clips when P received an award.

So why are folks ganging up on Q in regards to what he said? Hell it's true!!! On the flip side, Diddy isn't trying to learn what a "B Flat" is...he's just about making them dollars. Secretly, I love it when the real old school heads who were actually SCHOOLED in musicianship calls out these fools in the industry today. Look back at some Sammy Davis, Jr. clips when he was performing in his later years while he was battling cancer...he still called out musical notes during his performance to make sure the band was on key just like he did in his Rat Pack years and his voice, despite all the drinking, drugs and smoking he did, was FLAWLESS until the end. That's class baby. Singing "take dat, take dat" in a song, isn't. shrug Diddy's of my generation, but I got a stronger appreciation for the old heads though. Just sayin'.

I remeber a TV clip way back when Diddy was playing some crap with a Jackson 5 sample to Berry Gordy, like he had was elevating the J5 stuff to some new place. Diddy was so proud of what he had done, and wanted Berry to know how much he was revered and respected. Berry was generous in his response, but he seemed lilke a duck in some headlights trying not to give away what he was really thinking, that this dude 'Couldn't recognize a B flat if it hit him.'

You know whats funny though? On this subject, Quincy doesn't need defending AT ALL. I'm even more surprised at the people who made an issue out of it.

Hell, P.Diddy himself would probably say that "Quincy is right" while the same crowd will still cry wolf about Q's supposed "music snobbery" or whatever the popular argument thats taking place in the org these days.

Q has been recycling his own stuff since 1990. True, Quincy is one of the most musically accomplished composers of all-time, but come on.

he's coming from Jazz, and there it is absoultely standard procedure to redo your own (or other peoples) music over an over again, with same or with different arrangements, with new musicians, soloists and singers and so on. but no one is/was bitching about 1000 Ellington versions of Caravan or A-Train, Basie has a million recordings of Shiny Stockings or Corner Pocket. and I love each and every one of them lol

yes, I know, Q is doing all those guest rappers, hip & trendy sounds, AutoTune, and whatever. not on par with his older output, sure, everyone will agree. but most of it still worthwhile and certainly better than most other shit released today. and there is always the skip button for the stinkers smile
