Van Hunt - Recent Los Angeles Appearances Apparently, these were minimally advertised gigs to try out new material in a duo format. Theme bar in East Hollywood (Thai Town) Coolest part of the night was a conversation with Amber and Anita from the talented trio KING Each set started with Baby Please Don't Go by Muddy Waters. At some point in the set they launched into Willie The Pimp by Frank Zappa. Outside of Sexy, Sexy Love and At The End of a Slow Dance, I didn't recognize the rest of the material. Might get a setlist from Ruthie later. Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records[Edited 6/21/12 12:16pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. If Robert Christgau is right and D'Angelo is indeed the R&B Jesus, then Van Hunt is the Holy Spirit.
Voodoo and Popular are the best Soul albums of the past 30 years.

I saw Van Hunt tonight and he was terrific. It was a really small venue and I don't think it was well advertised at all--maybe he wanted it that way. It was just him on guitar and his sister on drums with one dancer at the beginning. Then, it was just the two of them. He played some songs off his old albums, then a couple of covers, including a Billie Holiday song, and then he played songs off his new album. Van Hunt was terrific! I thought I liked him on CDs but live...he kills it. He was so funny riffing off the audience, too. I hung around afterward, grabbed a couple of flyers, and one of his entourage took it back for him to sign it. I didn't look at it until I got home--it says "Stop Stealing Posters!" Designer Jeans is off the fucken hook. The guitar tone reminds of ol' Keef playing a Telecaster. Nice.
But I wish he had written a bridge for the transition from the verses to the chorus. And the keyboard solo at the end is gratuitous. (EDIT, I'm referring to Plum).
Watching You Go Crazy...is the best punk/funk song I've ever heard; hell, it's the only punky-funk song I've ever heard.
I still think Popular is a better album. I don't like the fact that What Were You Hoping For? doesn't have any low end.

Listened to the Daytrotter sessions.
Fuck D'Angelo and Fuck modern day Prince.

^
I said that because D'Angelo allows himself to be saddled with that unnecessary duty of being the successor to Prince and Marvin, and other soul predecessors who he feels he belongs to. And Prince lost the Holy Ghost after Sign O' of the Times. Prince belongs to the spectre of his past which he is either unwilling or can't reclaim.
Van Hunt belongs to Van Hunt.

First i've gotta give him credit for not making the same record over and over again. And the poor sound mix (especially the second location) didn't help. However, Ruthie Price can definitely play and you adjust to the duo format quickly.
