Lisa Stansfield Aims To Return to Music

June 25, 2012

Lisa Stansfield has sold more than 20 million records worldwide and she plans to solidify her reputation with a new album.

The singer's last release was The Moment in 2004; after dropping the project she shifted away from music to pursue acting. She was cast in several films including Goldplated, Marple:Ordeal by Innocence, Rolli Sydan and The Edge of Love.

"I'm a singer and I'm ready to get back to doing my thing. I guess you just hope that there's still a demand. I'm wanting to do an album that will make a real statement. It's time for a return," she told a UK newspaper.

After turning down countless reality TV offers, Stansfield wants to introduce to a new audience the talent that made her an international success in music.

Cool biggrin

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

she's got a small acting role in this pending british film, 'northern soul'... apparently filming started this month. should be good 4 a laugh

http://menmedia.co.uk/man...-the-faith

It’s got authentic stamped all over it, from the clothes to the music, hairstyles to the make-up. Northern Soul was a scene that defined a generation.

It has influenced songwriters and DJs and its distinctive sound remains as potent today as it was back in the late Sixties and early Seventies.

This is a film that encapsulates that enduring love affair with a cast including Lisa Stansfield, ChristianMcKay, James Lance, Elliot James Langridge and north west actor Josh Whitehouse (both in the lead roles).

And now, with Steve Coogan and Ricky Tomlinson on board, Bury-born Northern Soul obsessive, Elaine, is about to start shooting.

Telling the tale of two small town Northern lads whose worlds are changed forever when they discover black American soul music, the film sees them renounce their factory floor working lives for America to find that ‘pot of gold’ – the rare soul records that will catapult them into DJ legends on the UK soul scene.

Elaine admits she’s been meticulous about detail and has spent years honing the script.

She says: “I wanted to make a film that felt ‘real’, you know. It’s not just about the music, dancing and good times, there’s tragedy in there too. A snapshot of real lives. It’s not a documentary in any way but I have gone for that ‘fly on the wall’ feel.”

“Steve Coogan plays a teacher, it’s a small part but I’m really pleased he agreed to do it and Ricky Tomlinson plays the granddad.”

A couple of years ago, Elaine and producer, Debbie Gray set up a series of dance clubs – one in Bolton and one in London – for 16-25-year-olds who wanted to dance as extras in the film. There’s a chunk of all-nighter scenes so hundreds of dancers were needed and the sessions have proved successful.

“The classes have taken the shape of an actual soul night,” says Constantine, “in as much as we don’t ‘teach’ them to dance but we get the new kids to dance alongside some of the old soulies and basically copy their styles.”

The fact that these club nights have been running for more than two years only affirms the doggedness to keep it ‘real’.

Which is why the film and its crew are decamping to the north west for the duration of shooting, which starts in August.

“Bearing in mind it’s the Seventies,” she says,”we have to make sure there are no satellite dishes, wheelie bins or mobile phone masts around.

“And all the interior shots are being filmed in actual houses, not in a studio, so we’re on the hunt for some properties that can be transformed into a blast of brown, beige and burnt orange.”

Elaine says it was a ‘no brainer’ to shoot here in the north west, but she’s keen to point out that the town in the film is fictitious.

“I know the main towns on the Northern Soul scene were Wigan, Stoke and Manchester,” she says, “but I didn’t want to pinpoint a certain place, so I’ve taken relevant bits and put them all together.

"But I knew it had to be filmed here, it’s my old stomping ground – where I first fell in love with Northern Soul – it’s synonymous with the scene.”

Another thing Elaine has kept true to is the soundtrack and admits this was a particularly enjoyable, yet at the same time, formidable task.

Wasn’t it tempting to basically include her, say, top 100 soul tunes in the film? “It could have been,” she laughs, “and I did have a list of what I wanted to include. But it gradually became longer and I found it really hard to concentrate and had to stop myself from turning it into a bit of a trip down memory lane.

“But I did find it exciting, matching scenes with tracks I’d loved and cherished for years.”

Elaine has also enlisted the expertise of legendary Northern Soul DJ, Richard Searling to act as a music consultant and she reveals the film company is in early discussions about releasing a soundtrack to the film, which is planned for release around next spring.

“That’s the time scale we’re working toward,” she says. “We envisage shooting will be pretty much completed by the end of the summer and so spring 2013 is our projected release date.”

Films about music scenes are, it has to be said, nothing new. So how will Northern Soul differ?

Elaine says: “My film doesn’t sweeten it up - there’s no ‘cherry on the cake’. It feels real with real humour, tragedy and it highlights the passion people had for the music.”

Soul essentials

For the boys it was baggy trousers, Baggys, procured from Carnaby Cavern in London or, nearer to home, Slaters. Fitted Simon shirts, or for when you got really hot and sweaty, a vest, all adorned with soul badges.
Shoes were very important, so important in fact, many would bring them to the Casino in their holdalls and styles ranged from Hilton Park, Keele and Royals.
The girls were equally as obsessive with circle skirts that would spin when you did, fitted shorts or strappy vests. Shoes were Polyvelts, old fashioned Clarke’s sandals or brogues, all worn with short white socks or tan tights. Hair was worn either in a pony tail or bunches tied with baby ribbon (affectionately known as ‘streamers’)
For both sexes, fragrance was paramount – Brut for boys, Aqua Manda for the ladies.
