Yes and neither Janet or Mariah will ever reach the heights of Madonna and Whitney.

most successful debut world tour of any artist

first female to score Hot 100 #1s in the 80s, 90s and the new millenium

Academy Award nominee

"Control" was the first album to have 5 consecutive top 5 Hot 100 hits

first female recording artist of color to be nominated for a Producer Of The Year Grammy

And I thought we were done. But I digress..

What the fuck was so great about Janet?? Thin ass voice, boring ass dance moves, annoying ass squeaky voice. Just a boring ass broad.

I'm waiting..

Just your (silly ass) opinion. Just because Janet never falls out in the middle of the street due to a drug/drink-addled haze, or curses non-stop on TV, or behaves like a rude bitch to someone who is interviewing her, does not make her uninteresting or "boring". What the fuck is so great about her? I'll tell you. She has brought joy to many people over the years through her dancing, music, videos, concerts, kindness and beauty. She inspired kids to go back to school with "Rhythm Nation", and set up scholarships with that same album. She talked people off of ledges with "The Velvet Rope", and told them that it was okay to be themselves with that album and her book "True You". She gave young girls inspiration and made them feel okay to stand on their own with "Control". She asserted Black pride and pride of womanhood with "janet.". And, all the while, she made you dance your ass off. She weathered a storm of ignorance, small-mindedness and hate because: "Oh, how DARE one of her nipple-shielded mammaries fall out for half a second and damage the minds and souls of OUR precious young children!" (<--enter sarcasm here). The fact that you call anything Janet has done dance-wise "boring ass" just shows that you either ain't playin' with a full deck and/or are really bitter and envious, and it pretty much negates anything else that you've said (which isn't much) and will say. Iconic videos like Rhythm Nation, The Knowledge, If, Nasty, All Nite, etc., contain "boring-ass" dance moves? Chile, please.

Anyway, in this segment of the GUESS WHO COVERED JANET JACKSON IN CONCERT show, I present to you none other than MISS WHITNEY HOUSTON HERSELF!!!! Yass, huntey, in late '88, Nippy gave a brief but ROUSING rendition of "Control", and even big-upped Janet herself just before she broke into song. Such a pity that the Youtube video of this has been marked "private" as of late, but, never fear. I will post a photo of what that glorious video looked like in 5,4,3,2...

Gosh people, stop comparing them. They're all great and have done so much for people in their own ways. They all respect each other, well I dont know about Madonna and Janet, but all the rest of the ladies all have respect for what they've done musically.

For some reason, it seems like I haven't heard Mariah sing live on TV or whatever in what feels like ages. I thought I heard that even before she had her kids that her voice was starting to get weak prematurely...It seems like Mariah was an attempt to have another "Whitney Houston"...Mariah's earliest stuff especially (in retrospect) seemed a pretty obvious attempt to copy Whitney...

Well of course it did. Whitney's continued success throughout the rest of the 80s sparked a change in the music industry. Everybody wanted their own Whitney, que the influx of R&B divas 93-98.

Mariah continues to be the most successful Whitney clone. lol

Did Whitney incorporate rap (a controvetsial genre at the time) in her music? Or blend genres in the same song? Or how about write most of her songs?

I can only recall one Whitney song in which there's a guest rapper. Whitney has several gospel-influenced pop songs. Whitney also has one of the greatest selling gospel albums of all time. We all Whitney either didn't want to write or wasn't allowed to.

Of course Whitney didn't.

She didn't write or produce or choose her music herself. She just sang what she was given. A bit like... Rihanna.

She didn't want to write, most likely because she couldn't. She wasn't creative.

Potentially.

Whitney's album, was her first in 8 years. Obviously it would have a strong release...

Even 'Just Witney' released in 2002, only sold 200K first week.

Record companies realised that they could make more money from each record. All they needed was a singer with a pretty face who sounded good on a track and they were $$$.

It's different to have a female rapper on a female rap song. That song wasn't even that big of a hit. Paula even used a male rapper but it wasn't until Mariah started often colloborating with male gangsta rappers that it eventually became a formula that many people (including Whitney) would later use.
