They all pale in comparison to Teena Marie. She wrote, produced, and arranged!
I love Teena but she just was never an amazing singer. Awesome songwriter, proudcer and arranger though
She pulled it off live, without any gimmicks.
But she never gave the kind of performance Janet or Madonna did/do
Madonna can barely play guitar

Mariah can't play an instrument
Mariah can play piano

Are you joking? the janet. album came in 1993. That's was 11 years before the SuperBowl, which equals a long time. From 1993 until the early 2000s (and even before), Janet was on a plane all by herself. Not only did she sign the biggest recording contracts by EVER by a female during that time period, but all of her albums debuted at #1, she sold out concerts everwhere, the #1 hits kept on coming, she won heaps of awards, etc. Her biggest critical acclaim came in 1997. With 2001's "All For You", she broke radio records that took ten years to be broken (by Lady Gaga).
No I'm not Joking, I'm saying Janet became a superstar in the 1980's via Control & Rhythm Nation
Janet was huge & yes Velvet Rope. I love these 4 album but I'm saying she did start to waver in & out the lime light after Janet, After Velvet Rope she fell off. But Janet was HUGE in the 1980's
You know what, how many people aren't going to sell out concerts? Yes Janet will sell out concerts.
Janet during "All 4 You" wasn't as Big as Control/Rhythm Nation Janet, not even close
Oh lawd. Ok. During the AFY era, Janet was crowned MTV's first ICON, sold more albums the first week out than she ever had previously, acquired not only HER 10th Hot 100 #1 hit, but was the first solo female artist to have a #1 Hot 100 in the new millineum and in the 80s, 90s and 2000s, was awarded the American Music Awards Award of Merit--their highest honor and an award given to such artists as Prince, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston before her, embarked on her fourth world tour, starred in a film that opened #1 at the US box office, thanks in part to her fan base, drew huge crowds when she visited MTV's TRL, won a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording...

I have a lot of songs from her 1980's stuff, love her pop stuff maybe a song from the Preachers Wife
Whitney trying to do RnB and being like all the other female vocalists after Bodyguard was a bad move on her part
She should have learned opera and took her career to another level |

Janet and Mariah have released a bunch of shitty records. And not shitty in the sense that they were failed experiments. They just kept releasing the same boring ass shit over and over.
Madonna has taken a lot of risks. And Whitney's peak was so extremely high that damn near anything she did was going to be golden. Doubly so due to the breaks she took between material.

Mariah's career is different in that she started in the 1990's
Whitney Madonna & Janet came in the 1980's last age of 'superstardom'
As much as I love Velvet Rope, it was the album that I noticed the real start of repetitions |

I do agree with what silverchild said but if I had to rank them....
I would rank them:
Voice:
Whitney
Mariah
Janet
Madonna
Songwriting:
Janet
Madonna
Mariah
Whitney
Performance:
Madonna
Janet
Whitney
Mariah
Dancing:
Janet
Madonna
Whitney
Mariah
Success:
Madonna
Whitney
Mariah
Janet
Influence:
Janet
Madonna
Mariah
Whitney (While I do feel most people who aspire to sing listen to Whitney, they often sound more like Mariah then anyone else)
Overrall Package:
Mariah
Janet
Madonna
Whitney
Basically:
Madonna- Weak voice (aside from Ray Of Light era), amazing performer, great songwriter
Whitney- Heavenly voice and that's about it. Her performances are good but they focus and rely on the voice
Janet- Good voice (she does well with the range she has), amazing performer, great songwriter
Mariah- Great voice, okay performer, great songwriter
Fashion
Madonna (She's an icon in the fashion industry)
Janet
Whitney/Mariah (known for their beauty but not so much in fashion)
Acting
Whitney
Janet (not a good actress imo, but she has done some good roles)
Madonna (the only movie which she did well was Don't Cry for me Argentina)
Mariah (she was alright in the Precious movie but I havent seen much to judge)
Madonna did really good in A League of Their Own too
and nice small parts like in Girl 6 & Die Another Day (of course that's a bit different)
Didn't realize she did a lot of small roles here n there
Desperately Seeking Susan i think she did good in, it was more of her musical character at the time too so probably makes it easier
I loved Whitney in the Bodyguard, that's a wonderful movie altogether, she's done good in the following roles as well
Janet too me comes across as the same person from Penny in Good Times, Different Strokes, Fame ... the only roles a bit different to me was Poetic Justice, she might do better in Sci Fi movies

Oh, please...I aint pressed over nothing thats you I express my opinion and if that is how it comes across... so be it then..
How can you expect for people not to bash you but you insist on basing your arguement on irrelevant ignorant insults not just with MJ even in this thread.
If you like Beyonce ..so what its nothing wrong with it but you always wanna try to convince people that you dont when its clear you do and yes I take that into consideration when you make statements like Janet dances mediocre and if you seriously find joy in saying ignorant jokes about MJ just to get a rise out of some fans here than you seriously need to get a life
I dont come running no where, I just think your crazy and call you out on it

Janet got critical acclaim for playing the icy "Jo" in "For Colored Girls", and her dramatic work in "Why Did I Get Married Too" also drew good reviews. Neither of those characters resembled anything she did before. But hey, it's your opinion.

Great performances expecially that part in WDIGMT with the golf club. However I do think she'd probably be better in more fictional movies. Maybe a voice over, she's definetly got the voice for it |
