The Future- Will Pop Music Ever Recover? Pop music had always been the main source of a music audience from the 1940's to the present, but pop music was truly at its best until the late 1990s. Pop was at its healthiest from the 40s to the late 90s because record companies actually cared about entertainment, the the artists within their business. The late 1990s brought in a new era of music and a new way of business for the millenium. Record companies eventually have evolved into an appearence/ merchandizing business instead of a music based business. "Artists" are simply gathered based on their appearance, not on their talent. Songs are quickly written with half assed lyrics, and now record companies just try to make a quick buck off of a mediocre single. Artists are used like socks. More one- hit wonders are appearing now more than ever. Not only is this new music mediocre, but audiences are actually buying into it. pop music is directed towards children now, because selling to kids is the best way to make money. "Artists's" names are now more recognized than their music. Popular music is slowly and painfully evaporating as consumers are either focusing on classic material or music from more independant labels. The big labels are suffering and they are desperate. I am not saying that all Pop musicians are/were horrible. I'll give you a list of respectable pop musicians and the ones that I HATE:
The Respectable Pop Musicians: Adele( her voice! and she's not marketed on her appearence), Maroon 5 (JUST their early career), Nelly, Bruno Mars (a few decent tracks, but an impressive live performer,) Beyonce (her newest album is her most experimented yet, though I wonder how ahyone can love Jay-Z), Timberlake ( he was a bieber once, but his last album was impressive) Usher (1994 to 2010) Gotye ( he is newer, but his Peter Gabriel esque music gives me ome sort of hope and comfort), Black Eyed Peas (1997 till Elephunk).
The Shitty Pop Musicians- Katy Perry (sugar coated shit) Kesha (trashy garbage bag), justin Bieber (the new Aaron Carter), LMFAO (a disgrace to be blood related to Barry Gordy), Usher ( just his new album), Maroon 5 (Payphone----- smh.. ) Lil Wayne ( he's on the radio all the time, therefore he's pop) B. Spears ( she's still here?) Rihanna (just too fake) Nicki Minaj ( Her big ol ass is marketed more than her music), Drake (too repetitive) Black Eyed Peas ( The END and The Beginning) Carly rae Jepson (Call Me Maybe was o.k. at first, but I now HATE it), Christina Aguleira ( she's fat now-- what happens when your record label overuses you like a sock), Chris Brown ( if you like him, you have no brain) and all the rap artists, and producers who dare call themselves artists. Theres so many more to think of, if you have any, remind me!
BAck on track, pop music is clinically dead, but do you feel that sometime in the future consumers will wake up, record companies will fix up and music wont be as simplistic and mediocre as it is now. Will there be people who will emerge to the likeness of Prince, Michael JAckson, Madonna, Queen, Led Zeppelin the Beatles, Nirvana, jimi Hendrix, pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and all the other classic rock and soul that we all miss. Do you have hope that pop music will recover?
And if you tell me I'm getting old, I'm 18 so..... that puts a hole in your logic.
Peace and love, Fnkymanifesto7

I know it's in a bad place but by no means would I say it's dead. People aren't buying quite as much shit hop anymore. That right there is a major sign of hope. With people like Adele and Amy Winehouse I think the powers that be are starting to realize, you know, there might be something to this "real" music thing.
I think people are tired of buying shit music, and money talks.

I don't think it will. Pop music nowadays caters to teenagers who only care about the beat. I was watching live performances of Lana Del Rey and one of the comments was from someone saying "why does her voice go lower sometimes and then it goes higher???" Umm, maybe because once upon a time singers DIDN'T sing their entire songs in the same timbre (such as Rihanna). She sings every song in the same voice but nobody cares because they can dance to the beat. Even Madonna gave more varied vocal performances.
Songwriting has really gone down the tubes too. Every Rihanna song is 2 sentences sung over and over with some autotuned goat noises for kicks. She makes Paula Abdul look like a vocal genius.
I don't necessarily mind fluffy pop music, but there needs to be something fresh to it...At least Beyonce does interesting harmonies. You can tell she took more time on her songs than say, Katy Perry.
Artists may want to try somethng else, but the labels just want the status quo so they can keep the money flowing in.
95% of the music I listen to isn't even played on the radio. Radio is like the fast food of the music-listening-experience. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

Good music is in the same abundance now as it ever was. Its just just harder to find because the US corporate giants have been handed control.
Briefly, the internet looked like it might wrestle it back, but Apple snuffed that out by become a more controlling monster that the previous giants.
But the internet is still providing cracks in the corporate agenda. You will notice in the US that foriegn artists are on the climb, because they have been able to establish themselves outside of the US corporate control, then break in halfway up the ladder (eg Goyte, Adele).
I acutally find it more fun trying to find good music. Going to small gigs, downloading free songs from new artists. I get more of a kick listening to it and them beoing able to go and see the artist in a small venue.
The biggest thing I fear for is that in the fast consumer pace of music now, the generation behind me will not experience artists and bands that can headline gigs with 10 albums worth of great material behind them. Stadium gigs will become a thing of the past, unless the adapt and become mini festival nights with several artists. .

The fact that all those artists are considered respectable shows just how much music has declined.
Adele is the only artist that really has shown that POP music has some form of hope but I think people today dont rely on the radio for their music.
Nowadays people search for music and dig for newer artists or music they enjoy. People did this before but people are doing it more than ever now. Good music still exists but you will not find it on the radio or being marketed heavily.
I dont think people should have to settle for artists like Usher, Chris Justin, Beyonce just because their considered The Best out of a really bad bunch of artists when they are generic themselves. Consumers dont want to have to guess if Usher is going to come out with a Climax song one day or a OMG song the next day or if Beyonce wants to do a Countdown song and then release a Love on Top song... People just rather find the music that interests them. Those artists are just going to market what sells thats what POP always was about even though it was alot better material wise. I honestly dont see it getting any better.
I always find it funny in these discussions how NOBODY NEVER mentions artists like Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton as if the music industry ONLY consists of the artists mentioned. There are alot of great artists out there that people DO know about.

If I listen to the radio, it's usually the country stations or NPR, but once in awhile I'll put on the pop station to see what's going on over there. It's funny because for the longest time, country seemed immune to a lot of the pop music world problems, but now the same thing is happening. Dumb songs, faceless new artists, etc. It's all ripe for change, but change will probalby only come from the outside.

Sorry, you lost me right away by including Timberlake and Maroon 5 as "respectable musicians" I certainly don't think they are. Also, I wouldn't want another "Madonna" to come along 1 of her is bad enough and I wouldn't say most of her music is quality.
Also, pop music has always been about what the teeny boppers wanted The Beatles? Luckily this group had some good songs to go along with their popularity. David Cassidy/Patridge Family, Madonna, Britney Spears etc? all of them blew up thanks to teeny boppers. Record companies never cared about the artist throughout history-just look at all the older acts who tried or had to sue people just to get money owed to them. Also, image has always been very important. The Beatles stood out from the big acts at the time, many considered David Cassidy to be cute, and Madonna ripped off all the other popular women just ahead of her. Many teen girls started dressing like Madonna in the mid 80s.
Throughout music history we have always had good and bad popular pop music...It's not going to change...

Lol. Another music is dying thread. But when I think pop I think of people like Madonna, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, etc who I have NEVER liked. Pop music has always catered to teens that's nothing knew. I do like a few Rihanna songs, even though she's gone a litttle too far if you ask me. The only true pop artists I enjoy is Michael and Whitney. I don't consider people like Marvin, Aretha, Al Green, Funk bands, etc "pop" music because their music goes farther than pop. To me pop = disposable. And in their hey day they weren't considered pop either.

I find it funny you obviously gave Lady Gaga a snub when she sings well, plays piano great, and writes all her own music while P!nk sings fine and doesn't write a lot of music
