One man is dead and another is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a stage collapsed at Downsview Park Saturday afternoon, forcing the cancellation of a sold-out Radiohead concert.

Police said a man in his 30s was killed by a “heavy, crushing injury” after stage scaffolding fell just before 4 p.m., trapping him underneath metal debris. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Radiohead drum tech identified as victim in deadly Toronto stage collapse

TORONTO — Inspectors with Ontario’s ministry of labour are spending today combing through the wreckage of a stage that collapsed on Saturday during setup for a Radiohead concert in Toronto.

They’re trying to find out what caused the stage to come crashing down on a handful of workers, killing one and injuring three others.

Radiohead representative Laura Eldeiry confirmed the man killed was Scott Johnson, the drum technician for the British band.

Very sad. I remember there were at least two big stage collapse incidents last summer too.

This seems to be happening more. I guess one time was from high winds, but still.

no i agree with you but just as that country group got sued had to testify etc...and was brought up on charges i believe, i feel that is going to happen here, especially since the person killed was part of their road crew

I think these type of events always occur around the summer time. Curtis' incident happened around summer time too. High winds and I think a storm was predicted the night the railing fell on him.

Honestly looking at some of these things that they build for artists and how quick they put them up im surprised more dont come down, i dont really think there is anyone there that goes OK this is sound and sturdy as far as i know these things are pretty much assembled a day in advance, i mean its usually always put up by the artists road crew and like i said depending on how big the show or how much planning is available they are pretty much done on the fly

Yeah we kinda see how it's put up but they only show it outwardly instead of inwardly. So you never know how they put it together.

The collapse also destroyed the light show – this show was unique and will take many weeks to replace. The collapse also caused serious damage to our backline, some elements of which are decades old and therefore hard to replace.

I'm a fan of Radiohead but it seems they care more about the stage, lighting and cancelled concerts than they do about their drum tech and his family. I'm sorry to hear this happened.

This always makes me nervous when there is a lot of temp built parts of a stage and stuff hung from high above.

There's some backlash on their Facebook page regarding this statement, but drummer Phil has posted a comment about the loss of their drum technician a couple of days ago. I think they are the kind who deal with this more privately. There is no obligation for them to publicly comment on it, IMO. And I see the statement as a simple explanation why they have to reschedule anyway.

It's just as the statements says: they also have to deal with the practicalities. Next to the overwhelming grief.

I really feel bad for Radiohead. It's a great band and this is a painful loss.

Very sad That's where the SARS concert was held when Rolling Stones came.
