The Cure gets signed! The Cure Signs To I AM/ARTISTdirect
Seminal U.K. modern rock act the Cure has signed a three-album deal with producer Ross Robinson's ARTISTdirect Records imprint, I AM. Led by singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the band and Robinson are expected to begin work in London in July on a new album. "The Cure has been my favorite band for years and years," Robinson said in a statement. "They were instrumental in my approach to production. It was the Cure that opened me up to a more sensitive, heartfelt type of music, and I've been extremely loyal to that feeling in every project I've done since then." Robinson is best known for producing acts on the heavier side of the music spectrum, including Limp Bizkit, Korn, Sepultura, Slipknot, and At The Drive-In. Smith is the only original remaining member of the band he founded in the mid-1970s. Bassist Simon Gallup has been with the Cure since 1980 (save for a 1982-85 hiatus), while keyboardist Roger O'Donnell joined in 1988. He left in 1991, only to return in 1993, when his replacement, one-time roadie Perry Bamonte, switched to guitar and has remained in that post. Drummer Jason Cooper joined in 1995, replacing decade-long member Boris Williams. The as-yet-unnamed Cure album will be the group's 14th studio release. The band's last studio set, 2000's "Bloodflowers," debuted and peaked at No. 16 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 285,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Like all of the group's previous albums, it was released through Fiction, its U.K. label home, and Elektra in the U.S. -- Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.

I didnt know they were looking for/at a new label. I love Robert Smith, I want to meet him. BloodFlowers was a perfect Cure essence cd. Good return to form. "Climb in my fur."

Hope it is in the "Bloodflowers" vein. That Wild Mood Swings shit really didn't do anything for me. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Last I heard, he said it was going to be a 'heavier' album. If it's anything like "Open" and "End" from Wish then I'm all for it.

I am happy for them. I enjoyed them very much while I was in college. I missed their "very depressing" period, though. I bought "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" while in high school and enjoyed it very much. I even played "A Thousand Hours" for my mom...that was my "blue" period
I would love to enjoy them again... Tina (~!~)

They're all dark records but among the best they've ever made. Great stuff!

I've been listeneing to the Cure a lot lately. I love the really depressing stuff though. I also love the Smiths and Morrissey for this reason. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

i really love the cure, and eagerly await any new material that they release. for me, the seminal cure album is the head on the door. it is truely one of they great albums of the 80's, every track is great, and spans a lot of different styles.
i was fortunate to see the bloodflowers early promo tour when they played several cities in small clubs at the roxy in atlanta in 2000. that was prior to the big venue tour later that summer. the roxy holds about 1000 people tops and i was close down front. all the other times that i've seen them was in large venues. as many have posted previously, i liked bloodflowers, but i also like "the happy" cure as well, stuff like love cats, and some of the wild mood swings material. i think they are somewhat wrongfully stereotyped as only doing depressing stuff. many cure songs contain a lot of humor, it's just very dry, and many don't get it. ------------------------------------------------

i LOVE the cure. They have so many great discs, but my favorite has to be Disintegration. That is a brilliant album from start to finish.
And The Dream Tour - wow! I saw them when they came to the Washington, DC area. INcredible... I can't wait for the Trilogy DVD to come out. I"m excited about this new deal;.. particularly because it's a 3 album deal!! kewl. I'm still waiting for that oft-promised B-Sides collection...

I can not wait! "BloodFlowers" is easily one of my favorite records ever. I will always have a little "Robert Smith" in me. In fact, I think his writing style is most influential on my own.

Hey Jon. If you buy 'Standing On A Beach' on casette, it comes with all the b-sides up to 87, except for the ones collected on the 'Japanese Whispers' compilation. Only leaves you with 16 years worth of singles to collect. Hmmm. Oh well. "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"

I'd like a nice officially released B-sides collection... they have so many great ones... especially Play and A Chain of Flowers... one thing that i always wondered about - with so many great B-Sides, why do they never play them live? B-Sides rarely make an appearance in a live Cure show. Oh well.
