Good songwriter, but not a great voice.

And he really screwed up a couple of live versions of Money for Nothing.

their best album in my opinion cool , but a lot of people/fans will tell you that the debut or even Synchronicity is their real magnum opus...

Agreed. I find it amusing that the guys were dissatisfied with the production of Zenyatta and were forced to release the album as is. They felt that the mix was too rough and not adequate enough. Zenyatta found them balancing the punk-reggae sounds of the past with the polished new-wave influences of the present. Just an all-encompassing album with something for everybody.

and probably their only album without filler/crappy songs , though the debut is also very strong...

Yep. I can listen to this album and their first two albums without any skips. Their whole output is pretty flawless, if you ask me. But Zenyatta is the most complete, without a doubt.

He's done a lot of good music, but nothing great IMHO. And I couldn't love any artist who released something as bad as that godawful winter themed album from a few years back, which is the absolute worst CD I have ever spent money on.

Which album? Was it that bad?

Love him.
Went to one of his three sold out shows at Constitution Hall last year. He reminds me of John Mellencamp-- former 80's icon who actually matured and grew up and tried some other things

I haven't heard it so I can't comment on the quality but this is the album:

As far as sting himself I think he is pretty much the definition of the word "wanker."

Ha okay, I'll have to check out some of the songs...but you said the album sucked but you haven't heard it? Or is it just the idea of him releasing an album of this sort that irks you? smile Haha, what makes him a wanker though? smile

You are mixing me (rialb) up with Rioub. Easy mistake to make. wink Rioub was the one that said it was "the absolute worst CD I have ever spent money on."

What makes him a wanker? For me it's just his general vibe and demeanor. If you watch, listen or read his interviews he very much comes across as being a wanker. He certainly doesn't strike me as being a fun person to hang around with.

I would guess that Sting and Alanis Morissette could engage each other in some mind numbingly "deep" conversations. headache

I guess because he's on my list of "white man" crushes, I'm biased towards Sting, LOL. He can sing about paint drying and I love it regardless wink I guess that's why he was such the center of attention in the band, no doubt his looks at the time really helped him. LOL

...

... like others here, I liked Sting with the Police, and his solo stuff up until about '99...I kinda lost interest after that...but I was recently reading Andy Summers' book "One Train Later" and he acknowledges that while they had a great and unique sound playing together, it was Sting's writing that was also helping to propel the group forward...Andy also said that all three were very headstrong, and they all wanted their way...but they also sensed very early on that Sting was eventually gonna go his own way. According to Andy, he kinda knew, deep down---- it was just a matter of time....

I grew up as a fan of the Police and even early Sting albums, but as they went on I not only started disliking his albums, they made me look back at the Police through tinted glasses and now I pretty much hate the lot. There are a few Police songs I like, King Of Pain, Synchronicity II come to mind but how can I respect the man who wrote this...

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

Seriously, does the guy just open up a childrens rythming dictionary?!

and just to clarify, yes Sting, the Russians do love thier children... twat.

may display symptoms of sarcasm

One of my all time favs.....

A true musician and brilliant songwriter. He's assembled amazing backing bands too and has very high standards. He knows music and as such, knows musical talent when he sees/hears it.

Super intelligent and sophisticated...aristocratic even... you simply don't find that sort of thing in Pop music anymore---dude dabbling in Jazz, quoting Classical works. blending in World music, poetic lyrics full of metaphors--all while putting it in a package that appeals to musicians and regular mainstream music fans.

"Be Still My Beating Heart" has to be one of my ultimate favorite songs ever!! With my favorite lyric:

"I've been through every single book I know, to soothe the thoughts that plague me so

"Sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean, my logic has drowned in a sea of emotion..."

I mean....what an awesome way of saying 'I feel confused and miserable'.

And that voice, for a long time that trademark high voice was my favorite...I used to sing in my head voice all the time trying to emulate him. Over time, I became a bigger fan of his (other trademark) low, raspy, whisper voice.

My only regret is that many people only see him as some Pop singer...the same can be said for Prince too... but, these guys are the real deal.

The "Bring On The Night" DVD is required viewing as far as I'm concerned. That's where you discover how serious this guy is.
