Short answer: Afraid? I don't think that is the problem. Most artist are good (if they are any good at all) at one parrticular thing. I'd say the one thing they focus on probably hasn't been mastered 2 a point where they would like 2 stretch. Having said that, if an artsist gets comfortable in the arena that they have chosen, most don't want 2 or won't be allowed 2 change. Most of these artist make almost ZERO decisions on their own.

Where the hell have you been?!? Nicki Minaj & Usher has done something different. Both hip-hop/r&b artists has sold out to synthesized Euro dance-pop.

I don't agree with the thinking just because an artist or band had been lauded by critics, fellow musicians, or a group of people mean you have to like them just because. As I've said here many time, music isn't rocket science you know what you like and what you don't.
This notion that Hendrix problem or his lack of a Black fan base was partly the type of music he was playing., is simplistic at best: Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't Jimi Hendrix leave the US in part to establish his career? Ain't it ironic the Isely Brothers' left for Loudon and came back too. The Isely Brothers' went on to create music for another 30 years: Mr. Hendrix would be dead in 2 years of being reintroduced to his country. I have no misgiving that Hendrix would've faced the frustration of being marketed and defined by Rock & Roll music radio format. He may have found himself pushed aside because of Disco. But who knows where Hendrix's music creativity would've taken him. One can argue if he had chosen to explore different music genres would his established base been as accepting? Even so, Black people may have not liked Hendrix because they didn't like his music or maybe they hadn't really heard of him and hadn't formed an opinion nay or yeah. There was soooooo much other stuff to listen too...
