Lauryn Hill responds to accusations of tax evasion

The singer releases a statement explaining her alleged failure to file tax returns for three years running.

Lauryn Hill has released a statement responding to accusations of tax evasion.

The singer is scheduled to appear in court in Newark, New Jersey on June 29 to face three counts of evading tax payments. Each count holds a maximum penalty of one year in jail as well as a $100,000 (£64,000) fine.

Hill allegedly failed to file tax returns to the IRS from 2005 to 2007, a three-year period in which she earned an estimated $1.8 million (£1.2 million) from music and film royalties.

During a dense and rambling 1,300-word statement on her Tumblr page, Hill explained that she "left a more mainstream and public life" during the period to remove herself "from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it".

The singer went on to explain that she had placed the "safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns" and revealed that she had "conveyed all of this when questioned as to why I did not file taxes during this time period".

The former Fugees star also insisted: "My intention has always been to get this situation rectified."

Hill, 37, played her first UK show in over five years at London's IndigO2 in April. Her long-awaited second album, 'The Return', is expected later this year, though no release date has been set. The singer's 1998 solo debut, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill', won five Grammy Awards and sold an estimated 15 million copies worldwide.

If Lauryn doesn't convince the IRS to allow her to settle with them in a plea bargin, she's going to get her ass thrown in prison a lot faster than Wesley Snipes.

Count on it. neutral

Hopefully she can’t afford to pay the taxes. Then she’ll finally release an album and start showing up on time for her shows and we can all go back to actually enjoying her music.
