This is bass-guitar star Marcus Miller's UK-tour repertoire of last month, plus a few bonuses, including the finely spun vocals of young New Yorker Gretchen Parlato and the rasping ones of Dr John on two tracks. For jazz-funk fans, it's paradise – Miller's arrangements have the clamouring horn parts, snappy basslines, raw guitar fills and whipcrack backbeats of this style meshing like a racing engine, and, of course, there are plenty of jawdropping bass solos. Creative obliqueness (of the kind Miller brought to Miles Davis's Tutu and Amandla albums in the 1980s) isn't always apparent. The assertive foregrounding of the bass guitar doesn't exactly enhance the potentially mysterious Brazilian feature Setembro, with its vocals by Parlato and Ruben Blades, and horn-punching groovers such as Cee Tee Eye veer to the formulaic. But the exhilaratingly funky Detroit, the lyrical (and Tutu/Amandla-related) Redemption, or the Headhunters-like Slippin' into Darkness confirm Miller's mastery of his particular world. Solos from Lincoln Centre trumpeter Sean Jones and excellent regular saxophonist Alex Han spark fireworks, sly quotes from Dizzy Gillespie and Bob Marley classics add spice, and there's a poetic solo-bass finale on I'll Be There.

11 - EEC-TEE-EYE, featuring Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar, aka Mr I-played-with-all-the-world. Big bass for this mid-tempo song, supported by a strong horn section, a meat poulesque Maurice Brown, Kris Bowers great! Sumptuous arrangements used by the MASTER Marcus Miller. 12 - Tightrope, Janelle Monae, featuring Dr. John - Again, a very surprising recovery away from the original version, which was already very punchy (and a clip delicious!). My initial reaction, as a long-time fan is "wow"...kind of a new "high-water" mark for him, in an understated while typically brilliant fashion.

And through it all....there he remains Mr. PERFECT tone....lol. Admired for it as much as he's envied by fellow players, the man is just uncoincious when it comes to tone. Amazing.

Saw a clip this week of a bass "apocalypse" last year in L.A. (him, Larry & Verdine..just BANGING on it all in unison)....but had to laugh....even in the midst of the tripple bass blast, you could STILL hear M's tone clearly.

Legend for a reason.

Mr Clean is killer! It's an interesting take on it.

I've been at a couple of his gigs where I was sitting almost directly in front of his bass rig.
He gets amazingly close to that same awesome sound live.
