Maxi B. of the Mary Jane Girls radio interview

Wow,she really has alot on her mind! She tells the TRUTH about Rick James, the Mary Jane Girls, the shady dealings of JoJo's manager/husband....compelling stuff!!! It's a lengthy interview, but you gotta listen to it!

The interview starts at 20 min & 23 seconds : Very informative :

Interesting interview. At least she tried to get the original ladies all back

together.

Yeah, and I hope that JoJo hears this interview.Life is too short to hold grudges and lets egos get in the way.

Soul whom do you believe is telling the truth as far as the MJG

background vocals. I know when Teena Marie was on an episode

of Taj(SWV) I Married A Baller Teena specifically stated that all

the MJG vocals were done by JoJo and the Waters sisters.

Maybe a majority of them were. I know for a fact that was

Cheri singing Jealousy and Candi and Corvette also got to

sing lead on a track or two as well. Maybe the Waters sisters

did all the backing vocals for the tracks JoJo sung lead on.

That's what's so interesting about this interview because Maxi

says it isn't true.

It's hard to know what to believe,we've heard several conflicting stories lol The one thing I know for sure is that,ALL four of the girls could really sing.I have seen the Mary Jane Girls in concert and they definitley were NOT lip-syncing.They sound good. And like you said, the various members sang lead on certain songs (Cheri on "Jealousy"Maxi on "Leather Queen",Corvette on "Girlfriend",etc),proving that Rick had confidence in their vocal abilities. If the Waters sisters were involved at all, their input was probably minimal.

Maxi's version of the Mary Jane Girls (called M.J.G.) has some performances lined up with the original Stone City Band.I'm glad that she's moving on.Life is too short. While Jojo continues to hold a grudge and play games,Maxi and Cheri are moving on with their own version of the group. With two of the original members, and dates with the Stone City Band,I think that THIS is the Mary Jane Girls to go see.

I see that Val Young is still out there, with her own version of the group falloff Rick's daughter actually put this group together, which is why they're able to use the name.Kinda ridiculous, since NONE of these women were ever in the original group.

During that interview,Maxi brought up an interesting point: if the four original ladies got back together, there would be alot of new opportunities for all of them. For starters, there would be an "Unsung" episode and as Maxi mentioned, they could possibly get a reality show. Also,as Maxi mentioned, when Rick was alive,he stopped them from accepting many opportunities and deals but now that he's gone, there's nothing standing in their way. They can do many great things now,and reap the rewards.A new album,a reunion tour, the sky's the limit!

It's a ridiculous situation. There are three different versions of the Mary Jane Girls lol There's Val Young's fake group, there's JoJo touring with two backup singers who were never a part of the original group, and then there's Maxi's newly formed group (which at least includes two original members).

To her credit,Maxi is trying to do stop all this madness. She's trying to convince JoJo and Candy to get back together with her and Cheri, and do a "real" reunion. The way it should be done.

Just listened-Maxi is a real character and came off as quite charming IMO. I wish when she briefly mentioned that Prince stole Ricks' idea for the girl group when he came out with Vanity 6 that the interviewer had asked her about them lol I've always wanted to hear from the mouths of the ladies in both groups if there was ever a feud/rivalry between Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 and MJG.

It's kinda funny how Rick had all these ideas, but allowed Prince to beat him to the punch lol In addition to the sexy girl group idea,Rick was planning a movie in 1982 called "Spice Of Life".He didn't follow through with it,while Prince came out with his own movie in 1984.Rick should have been more aggressive.

One of the most shocking parts of her interview......

She mentions a conversation that Rick was having with Berry Gordy. He suggested to Rick that he "put the ugly duckling (JoJo) in the back, and make the light skinned girl sing lead" eek "Then they will be able to crossover",he said.

That actually doesn't shock me. It sounds totally like something BG woulda said during that era.

Also, Berry, <ANNG! WRONG>...lol. I'll take JoJo upfront all day (night) long with that lineup.

Jojo's tyrannical husband/manager is member of this very forum. Just look up any past MJG thread where someone is vehemently slandering the other members and Val Young and you've got your man! lol

Also just wanted to say-I never realized how pretty Maxi was. I don't know if she's had work done, but I think she looks a LOT better now than back in the videos and pics of the MJG. I used to think she was kinda scary looking/almost drag queenesque back then but she looks great now nod

I don't know too much about the 'Spice Of Life' movie, but my guess is that it would have been loosely based on Rick's life story. The co-stars would have been Teena Marie,The Stone City Band and possibly a cameo by the Temptations. In other words,it would have been Rick's Purple Rain lol

A total creep! I truly believe he's the determing factor between the real Mary Jane Girls not regrouping, as Maxi stated.

One thing sure, tho. They NEED to get this crap sorted & do things right...b4 it's really too late for a decent simple reunion.

The main problem seems to be Jo Jo's husband. Jo Jo is the lead and if her husband wasn't

so defiant she would probably sign on and all the cards would fall in place.

It's sad when ego and money gets in the way of bands reuniting. We've seen this same scenario with other Old School groups (The Stylistics,The Delfonics,Klymaxx,War,etc). It's absurd to see several versions of the same group, out there touring.

Really is. I wonder if they know (all those that Soul mentions, too) that there's a real "market" out here for this kinda thing?

I mean, for real, we all love these groups from yesteryear & would make a sincere effort to turn out & support 'em.....but dammitt.....NOT if it's like THIS. It just pollutes the warm vibe of getting back together, jammin & enjoying some memories....
