"Well it looks like the road to heaven

But it feels like the road to hell

When I knew which side my bread was buttered

I took the knife as well

Posing for another picture

Everybody's got to sell

But when you shake your ass

They notice fast

And some mistakes were built to last."

----

Probably some of the most honest lyrics about celebrity I ever heard.

Didnt Alicia Keys remake this song? She performed this song on stage a couple of times but she can't touch the original.

The video is classic place all of the hottest supermodels of that time in one video...Genious..

'bread and butter' is kind of old school slang for job or career. it refers to what a person does, or in this case, feels they have to do to, to put food on the table.

george is saying he knew that one could do certain things to garner fame and money, and further a career, and once he figured out which things could get him what he wanted faster, he wholeheartedly accepted doing those things. hence, when he figured out on which side his 'bread was buttered', he not only agreed, he took 'took the knife' and buttered it up himself, meaning he was eager to sell out, if you will. he's filled with regret and recriminations for doing that which he believed led him on the 'road to hell' because of the feeling that he had sold his soul. he concludes that some mistakes were built to last, because after he decided that he no longer wanted to 'shake his ass' or live up to the image that he had created for his 'bread and butter', he got a lot of backlash ('that's what you get for changing your mind').

i've always liked this song, too.
