Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
I felt like with all the hate surrounding crazy Lauryn, it was time to remember what made her famous in the first place, her amazing music.

This song is the shit , and that video imo is very ahead of it's time with that split-screen dynamic.
Lauryn had a great message in the song & entire album. I will always dig her music, even when her personal life can become to much to hear about Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I like the album version in the beginning when she does the doo-wop harmonies...

^^I feel the same way. I remember back when this song came out and it was EVERYWHERE. Not a single radio station (probably aside from rock and country) wouldn't play it. And it wasn't just for a little while either. [Edited 6/9/12 17:09pm]

I Know some people hate them, but i like the interludes on some of the songs in Miseducation.
And i like the one when the kid's talk about love after Doo-Wop & than it goes to Superstar! love it Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I like the interludes. I think they fit well with the songs and give the album a more personal feel

The interludes went well with the album's cohesiveness. In fact the way it was set up was almost like a Marvin or Stevie record in the '70s.

When this cut came out, it blew everyone away. This video was so significant to me coming up and it was rare for artists at that time to pay homage to the past, while showing love to the present at the same time. Lauryn had something going at that time. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was a big part of my growing up. Everybody in my family, including older members were mesmerized what went into this album. It simply had something for everybody and I always admire Lauryn for branching gaps and uniting generations.

I remember thinking that a duo sang this song from watching the video.
*sigh* at Lauryn. She would still be a force in music today had she kept on.
It's sad she ruined her career, and from what I've seen her voice too.

It's been a very long time since I played this album. Think I might pull it out and have a listen through for old times sake.

Hearing celeste, clavinet, fender rhodes, harp, organ with doo wop harmonies scattered all over a hip-hop album was TOO much to take in for my 16 years old pair of ears at the time.
Most of all, lyrically, she hitting home runs. Its no wonder why this album still means so much to so many people after 14 years, she poued her heart on wax.

Technically speaking it wasn't even a hip-hop/rap album. It featured more R&B along with some soul, reggae and gospel influences. Hip-hop was just part of the variation of genres than the major genre on that album.

A stone cold classic... one of the songs that defined my senior year of college. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
