Lupe Fiasco- Lasers, Sellout or Growth?

Now for those who are fans of this album, it has literally been a year since i listened to it lol

IDK why but i revisited it today, as many know he cried foul saying the label had to much say in the sound and lyrics of the album.

As far as rhymes & subject matter he is as smart as ever, he has a message and he sticks to it. And he like's to convey it no matter the message.

But then the chorus will have techno breakdowns confused , and the lyrics revolt, point out hate & racism. Fight the power.. but the sound of the music is telling me ''Oops i did it again or Teenage Dream'' lol

I love Lupe's personality and his lyrics but the sounds and the collabs on this album are so eh.

Words i never said is a powerful song imo, And All Black Everything is also great but the drum beat is so......... whofarted

And the collab with trey songs barf

Opinions fellow Fans?

Listen to his mixtape, Friend of the People: I Fight People. You be the judge...

I'll just say this, the whole lack of creative direction and rebelling against the record label stuff he was preaching last year might've looked good on the surface, but dude clearly contradicts himself.

The label wanted something commercial.

He tried that.

So now he can do what he does.

I think artists should strongly consider hammering out their own production work, then they wouldn't be a slave to the hottest-beat-to-the-highest-bidder merry-go-round.

J Cole produced most of the beats on his debut and his album is strong.

I really enjoyed I'm Beamin' and I was really upset that it didn't make the album.

There's actually two versions of Lasers. One version was sent into the label in 2009 but the label rejected it because it wasn't "commercial" enough. They kept making him redo the album until it was more generic and radio friendly.

This was actually the direction Lasers was going to go in orginally.

Well i know If You Want To was on Travis Barkers solo album. But true! i heard these track's and love the production way more.

But still there is the issue with the Lupe mix-tape confused and the rather same type of production. I still don't get that.

I didnt loose my respect to Lupe, because I know how the industry works, they want hits and espcially now that hip-pop is selling around the world. I thought the lyrics on Lasers were overall good and compared to other mainstream artists he def was superior to them lyrically, but knowing how good Lupe is; it's pretty sad. Is it a growth? No I dont think so, you could argue he's tried something new but then again not really, because the beats are very generic and the message gets lost with the stupid euro-house/electro beats. For the fans that had been waiting for years, it was very dissapointing. I remember when I saw him back in 07 and I never thought he'd be doing crappy music in 2011. Problem tho is that the industry is trying to make artists become the new "kanye west" with a very pop sound (just look at B.O.B his mixtapes were great lyrically / musically too while the released albums are disapointing), and some artists arent meant to be sold like that, I really think that if Lupe had done a type of old school album people would have bought it. He's not a sellout all the way, but nor is he the artist we thought he was. I hope his new album is better! smile
